BIBLE STUDY: Just What The Heck Do You Mean By Hell?

The modern English word, “Hell” is actually an old Anglo-Saxon word; but what does it mean? Do you consider the word to be a form of profanity; or a bad word children shouldn’t use? Is it a final destination for some wayward humans at the end of their lives? Is it where the devil lives and rules the underworld from; a place full of flames and tormented souls? www, onug.us

Jesus told us that it was given to us, to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 13:11). He also told us that we were elevated from the position of servants, to that of Jesus’ friends; and ALL things that He had heard from His Father, Jesus has made known unto us (John 15:15)! Those are some pretty cool statements and promises, and if true, which I believe they are; why are so many people confused about what and where “HELL” is today?

Bible Study Instructions: One Nation Under God Ministries (www.onug.us) publishes and distributes weekly Bible Studies, worldwide – free of charge, to anyone who requests them, in both printed and electronic formats. Our Studies are intended to be a simple and fun way to learn the Scriptures, and are very easy to follow! We adhere to Jesus Christ’s Biblical instructions to teach and feed the flock of God portions of meat in due season, on weekly Sabbaths, and on the seven annual Holy Days throughout each calendar year (Luke 12:42 / Isaiah 28:9-10 / Matthew 13:52). Using both the Old and New Testaments, our Bible Studies are designed to present a premise, make a statement, or ask a question – followed by one or more Scriptural references. Just look up and read from your Bible the Scriptures listed. Comments following questions elaborate on the Scriptures you just read. Pray always before beginning any study of God’s Word, asking God to open both your eyes and your mind to His Truth; then Prove everything you read, is in fact the Truth, by comparing it to The Word of God (1 Thessalonians 5:21 / 2 Timothy 3:15-17). Then use the Biblical System of Checks and Balances, and SEE if both Jesus Christ, and the First Century Church of God Apostles – also Did, Said, and Taught these SAME THINGS (Galatians 1:1-12, 5:25 / 1 Peter 2:21, 25 / 1 John 2:3-6)! That’s all there is to it! Our Bible Studies are based on the King James Version, unless otherwise stated. We will be praying for your eyes to “see” (Matthew 13:11-17); and we are always available to answer any of your questions! Be Blessed, in Jesus’ Name! - One Nation Under God Ministries (www.onug.us).

What The Heck Do You Mean By Hell?

One reason for the confusion, may just be the Bible you are holding in your hands! How many times can you find the Old English word “Hell” in your version of what was once written as a Hebrew, Greek, and then Latin Bible?

The Number of Times “HELL” is written in different Bible versions:                                                          www.onug.us

By contrast, we find the word “Heaven” listed in the KJV: 327 times in the O.T., and 255 times in the N.T.; for a total word count of 582 for heaven, versus 54 for hell. A detailed study of Scripture also reveals there are three (3) heavens listed in the Bible, and three (3) hells! Are you confused yet? :o)

Oh, Hell
A Poem By James Whitcomb Reilly

Oh Hell… just what is meant by this word Hell.
They say sometimes it's cold as Hell,
Sometimes they say it's hot as Hell.
When it rains they say it's Hell they cry,
And it's Hell when it's dry.

They hate like Hell to see it snow,
It's a Hell of a wind when it starts to blow.
Now how in the world can anyone tell,
What in the Hell they mean by this word Hell.

This mad life is Hell they say,
When he comes in late, there's Hell to pay.
When she starts to yell it's a Hell of a note,
And it's Hell when the kids you have to tote.

It's Hell when the doctor sends you his bills,
For a Hell of a lot of trips and pills.
And when you get this you will know real well,
Just what is meant by this word Hell.

Hell yes, Hell no, and oh Hell too,
The Hell you don't and the Hell you do.
And what Hell of a Hell it is,
The Hell with yours and the Hell with His.

Now where in the Hell and oh Hell where,
And what the Hell do you think I care.
But the Hell of it is it's sure as Hell,
That we don't know what in the Hell is HELL!!!

The Bible uses the word “Hell” fifty-four times from cover to cover; but the crazy thing is, it is translated from four very different words, with three very different and distinct meanings! What the hell? And no, the Bible does not say the word hell is profanity, or a curse word. That’s something we humans have made up for ourselves; it’s kind of an old Puritan church tradition of sorts!

One Hell of a Truth:                                     www.onug.us

So join us today, as we discover what the Bible really says about these four different words, and the three very different places, everyone calls by the same name: “Hell”.

When we examine the fifty-four (54) times the word "hell" is used in the Bible, we find that thirty-one (31) times it is translated, in the Old Testament, from the Hebrew word “Sheol”; and eleven (11) times more, it is translated, in the New Testament, from the Greek word “Hades”.  Sheol and Hades, although different words appearing in the Old and New Testaments; are written with the intent that they have identical meanings, regardless of whether we are referring to Sheol in the Old Testament, or Hades in the New Testament.

Let’s compare Psalm 16:10 with Acts 2:27, 31. We can see too distinctly different words, both being translated as “Hell”.

It is much like the Old Testament prophet Isaiah, being called “Isaiah” in the Hebrew (Isaiah 13:1) being called “Esaias” in the New Testament Greek (Matthew 13:14); two different names for one and the same person! Ask a Spanish speaker how they would pronounce the name, “Jesus” and you see yet another example of how God scrambled our languages to confuse us (Genesis 11:9). But rest assured, that when God wants His children to have clarity of understanding… we get it (Job 32:8 / Genesis 41:38-39 / Job 12:12-13 / Proverbs 2:5-12 / Ecclesiastes 2:26 / Daniel 1:17-20 / Revelation 10:7-11, 11:1-4 / Psalm 111:10 / Matthew 13:11-16 / Psalm 119:98-104)! Amen! I just love God’s Wisdom!

To Hell in a Hand Basket:                             www.onug.us

The primary meaning of Sheol and Hades is The Grave.

We can plainly see this in 1 Corinthians 15:55, where the Greek word Hades is actually translated “grave”, in the King James Version (Revelation 6:8 / Isaiah 38:10, 18 / Daniel 12:2 / Ezekiel 37:1-14 / Luke 16:19-26 / Numbers 16:30, 33).

Hell: 54 times in the Bible

- 31 times in the Old Testament (Sheol) meaning “grave”.

- 11 times in the New Testament (Hades) meaning “grave”.

- 42 usages so far, ALL meaning “Grave” (12 more to go).

Bored As Hell:                                                www.onug.us

There is also a one-time only occurrence in the New Testament, where our modern word “Hell” is translated from yet a third word; the Greek word “Tartarus” (2 Peter 2:4).

See also Luke 8:26-35 to see that the demons now on the earth, know they are to be thrown in the bottomless pit (Tartarus), “into the deep”; at the Second Coming of Christ, FOR A THOUSAND YEARS (Revelation 20:1-3).

We can also see that this place of demonic confinement has existed since the angelic (demonic) rebellion (Revelation 12:3). Some fallen angels were, and still are so terrible, that God has had them bound, apart from influencing humanity or this world, since that time, in a deep bottomless pit (Revelation 9:1-12); but they will be unleashed at the end of this age – to wreak havoc upon the earth before Jesus returns (Revelation 9:13-21).

When Christ returns, ALL the demons (those that were upon the earth, and those which were let out of the bottomless pit) along with Satan; are again bound in Tartarus, and removed from interfering in the affairs of mankind – for a thousand years (Revelation 20:1-3). When the thousand years are finished, Satan and His Demons will be let out of one “Hell” (Tartarus) and after a little season, be thrown into yet another hell, the final “Hell” the Lake of Fire (Revelation 20:7-10 / Matthew 8:28-34).

Hell: 54 times in the Bible

- 31 times in the Old Testament (Sheol) meaning “grave”.

- 11 times in the New Testament (Hades) meaning “grave”.

- 01 time in the New Testament (Tartarus) meaning “deep, bottomless, pit or place of darkness”. Think “Black Hole”; nothing escapes this “Prison” unless God allows – which He does twice (Revelation 9:1, 13-15, 20:7)

- 43 usages so far, 42 meaning “Grave”, 1 meaning “pit or prison” (11 more to go).

Hot As Hell:                                                     www.onug.us

Twelve times in the New Testament, "Hell" is translated from the Greek word “Gehenna”, which refers to that final lake of fire (the Second Death for mortal humans), which was prepared for Satan and his demons; and into which the wicked will be cast alive, after the second resurrection, which will occur at the end of the 1,000 year Millennium Rule of Christ (Revelation 20:10, 14-15 / Matthew 5:22, 10:28 / Mark 9:44).

There is nowhere in the Bible where "Hell" means a lake of fire which is burning now, at this present moment (it starts only at the return of Jesus to this earth. The Beast and the False Prophet have the dubious honor of being the first two humans to die the Second Death, to burn up, and be consumed in the Lake of Fire (Revelation 19:11-15, 19-20 / Daniel 7:7-14, 21-27 / Isaiah 1:28-31 / Matthew 3:12 / John 15:6 / Malachi 4:1-3 / Hebrews 6:8). The wicked die in “Hell” (Gehenna), The Second Death – they burn up in the flames and die (Revelation 2:11). Nowhere does the Bible say the wicked will be forever burning, and forever tormented. One must be alive forever, to be tormented forever! The wages of un-repented of sin are death and the grave – the first time you die – not eternal life (Romans 6:23 / Genesis 2:17 / Proverbs 11:19 / Galatians 6:8 / Ecclesiastes 9:1-6); and the Lake of Fire is your final reward, the second time you die, if you reject Eternal Life during the 100 years God will give all mankind, after the Second Resurrection – this is also known as The White Throne Judgement (Revelation 20:12-15).

(Revelation 14:9-11) The disobedient spoken of here, those who have no rest (Sabbath) day or night; are those who suffer during the seven last plagues before Jesus Christ returns. They did not keep God’s Sabbaths or His Commandments as His Saints did (Revelation 14:12-13). The smoke of their torment, ascending up forever, does not mean that they will burn for all eternity; instead it refers to, and means that they will be forever burned up – their lifetime has ended – if they do not repent, and Follow Christ at the Second Resurrection! Think about a house fire, where unfortunately several people have died. The people died very quickly in the flames, as all flesh does; however, the structure can smolder for days afterwards – long after the flames have died out, and long after all have died – the smoke of that tragedy can continue to rise from the ashes. This is how the Lake of Fire will one day be! God uses the destruction of Babylon, at Christ’s Second Coming, to teach the world about the penalty for sin, and the Lake of Fire that will serve as final judgement for the whole world at the end of time (Revelation 19:3, 18:8).

The word "forever" is used in the Bible sometimes to denote just an ordinary lifetime (1 Samuel 28:2, 1:22, 28 / Exodus 21:1-6 / Genesis 44:32 / 1 Chronicles 28:4). Forever was also used to refer to the three days and three nights Jonah spent in the belly of the great fish (Jonah 2:6). Biblically, the word "forever" can mean a limited duration of time, a remaining lifetime; as well as an infinite duration of time.

Burn in Hell:                                                 www.onug.us

Gehenna (the valley of Hinnom) is a Final Punishment for those who reject Eternal Life (Ezekiel 18:4)! The punishment for sin is not eternal life in misery; but eternal death, permanent death, the Second Death, which will last for all eternity – Forever (Romans 6:23 / Revelation 21:8 / Deuteronomy 32:22-29).

The punishment of the wicked (Death) in Gehenna Fire, will last just as long as the reward of the righteous (Eternal Life); and will happen just as fast!!! The righteous receive everlasting life, and the wicked receive everlasting death. This is exactly what Jesus Christ told us in His very own Words (Matthew 25:46)!!! Destruction is called a punishment in the Bible; therefore everlasting destruction must be an everlasting punishment (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).

A Cold Day in Hell:                                            www.onug.us

There cannot be any such thing as an eternally burning, hot hell fire (Gehenna), because the time is coming when the wicked will not exist and their place will not exist (Psalm 37:9-11 / Revelation 21:1-8). The story of the rich man in hell and Lazarus in Abraham's bosom in Luke 16:19-31 was not told by Christ to show what happens to people when they die, because before He told this story, He had declared in plain language that the wicked would not be cast into the fire until the end of the world (Matthew 13:40-42), and that every man would be rewarded at His second coming (Matthew 16:27). This story harmonized with the ideas that the Pharisees already had of the hereafter; it was given by Christ to rebuke them for their covetousness, in teaching that “riches are a mark of God's favor, while poverty is a mark of God’s curse”.

When God the Father purges this world once and for all, from sin and of unrepentant sinners, there will be no more need of a physically hot, physical flame, Lake of Fire. It will still exist as a place of containment and torment for Satan and his demons; but the hot flames of “Hell” will turn cold and be extinguished (Isaiah 47:14). It really will be a Cold Day in Hell (Gehenna)!!!

What will happen to the Wicked? The Bible tells us in 15 places that they will DIE; which means that they will cease to live! In 12 places it says that they will PERISH; which means they will be brought to nothing, and be blotted out of existence! In 13 places, the Bible says the Wicked will BE DESTROYED; which means they will be annihilated! In 5 places, the Bible says that the Wicked will be consumed, which means that they will be totally exterminated.

One Hell of an End!                                          www.onug.us

When Jesus returns to Reward His Saints with Eternal Life, and to set up His 1,000 year Kingdom UPON THE EARTH; 200 million men will come to march against Him and His Saints, in the Battle of Armageddon (Zechariah 14:12-15 / Revelation 9:16 / Ezekiel 39:17 / Revelation 19:17-18, 21 / 1 Samuel 17:39-58).

What would you do with 200 million dead bodies (Ezekiel 39:1-20)? The dead are buried for seven months in the Valley of Hamon-Gog (which literally means “valley of the multitudes of Gog”). This is not the final destruction of Gog and Magog which will occur at the end of the Millennial Rule of Christ and His Saints (Revelation 20:7-9). Notice in Jeremiah, Gog has other nations in alliance with him; after the 1,000 years are over and Satan is released; only Gog and Magog are susceptible to the devil and his schemes! The Fire which comes down from God the Father is permanent death! It is not a temporary death as stated in Jeremiah; as those who are fed to the birds will come up again in the Second and final Resurrection of the dead (Revelation 20:5 / Ezekiel 37:1-14).

The valley of Hinnom (Ge Henna: Jeremiah 7:32, 2:23, 32:35, 19:5-6) is a deep valley, adjacent to Jerusalem’s southern side; God uses this to dispose of the Beast and False Prophet (Revelation 19:20); it now becomes the eternal Lake of Fire! It will take seven years to burn, melt, or smelt the military hardware left behind by the world’s armies (Isaiah 2:4-5). Walking in the Light of the LORD requires keeping the Sabbath and ALL of God’s Holy Days; and the terrible carnage left behind as a reminder (Burning the dead bodies before burial - what’s left after the birds finished with them, the guano from the bird’s feasting, maggots and bugs galore, collecting billions of human bones), this will cause all the people of the world to stand up and take notice of a Holy God and His Ways (Isaiah 66:23-24 / Zechariah 14:16-19). But seven months later, the fires will die out (except for the Lake of Fire), and the maggots will go away!

It is Cold as Hell!                                            www.onug.us

Now that you know the Biblical Truth about Hell. We hope that the old fables you had previously believed in, will deceive you no more! You should place the concept of an eternally hot Hell into the category of common folklore (Isaiah 47:14 / Revelation 7:15-17)! Hell will burn COLD; after that it will just be a containment site for 50 million demons who will be tormented day and night forever – by “spiritual only flames” which are not hot (Revelation 20:10 / Ezekiel 28:14-16 / Isaiah 6:6-8)!!! One day soon, it will be A COLD DAY IN HELL!!! This is The TRUTH of God; and Satan wants to keep it from you!!!

Let’s Get the Hell Out of Here:                   www.onug.us

God’s Plan is to have a world and a universe free from sinners and free from sin. When He does that, He is even going to get “Hell” (all 3 of them) the hell out of here (Revelation 5:11-14, 21:14-15, 21:5)!!!

So in Summary; “Hell” appears 54 times in the Bible:

- 31 times in the Old Testament (Sheol) meaning “grave”.

- 11 times in the New Testament (Hades) meaning “grave” (which is 42 of the 54 meanings of “hell”).

- 01 time in the New Testament (Tartarus) meaning “deep, bottomless, pit or place of darkness”. Think “Black Hole”; nothing escapes this “Prison” unless God allows – which He does twice (Revelation 9:1, 13-15, 20:7). This is only for the fallen angels.

- 11 times in the New Testament (Gehenna) meaning “final lake of fire” (the Second and Permanent Death for mortal humans). This is where Satan and his demons will be tormented day and night, forever and ever (meaning the torment “of only immortal demons” will never end); and into which the wicked will be cast alive, 100 years after the second resurrection begins (Revelation 20:10 / Isaiah 65:20).

Why The Hell Did He Do That?                         www.onug.us

Why would Satan want to fabricate all this confusion and lies about “Hell”, and do it within the minds of those who call themselves by God’s Name? Because that’s what he does (Revelation 12:9 / John 8:44); but more importantly so you will never know THE TRUTH of God’s Plan… until it’s too late, and you have missed out on your chance to participate in it (John 10:10)!!!

Revelation 3:5, 11-13, 7:9-17, 14:1-5, 21:1-7, 10-27 / 1 Kings 7:21 / Psalm 46:4 / Isaiah 62:2 / Jeremiah 1:18 / Ezekiel 40:49, 48:35 / Galatians 2:9, 4:26 / Hebrews 13:14 / Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 22:1-7, 14-21!!!

To learn more about what Satan and his demons really look like today, we invite you to read our Bible Study:

How Could A Holy God Ever Love A Sinner Like Me?

Once you realize that angels and demons look NOTHING like the world’s churches portray them as being, you should wonder what else they are twisting and keeping YOU from knowing that is REALLY IN YOUR BIBLE!!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The sad state of affairs today is that the vast majority of Americans are Bible illiterates (Hosea 4:6). They simply have never read the book which they profess to regard as the “Word of God”. If we are to change this, we must begin using the Bible as our primary source of education, to learn about God and His teachings (Matthew 6:33).

If you have never faithfully kept God’s seventh day Sabbath holy or God’s Holy Days, the way Jesus Christ did – in the flesh, and in the fellowship of other followers of the Son of Man (Hebrews 10:25); we invite you to obediently enter into God’s rest today, and to keep the Feasts of the LORD (Hebrews 4:1-11 / Leviticus 23:1-44)! Contact us to find out where we fellowship and worship God, in your area, on His Sabbath Days (Exodus 31:12-18). We would love to hear from you and help get you started!

”But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one” (John 10:26-30).

Christians must learn to read the Bible, interpret the scriptures according to Biblical principles (Isaiah 28:9-10, 13), and begin to apply the precepts they learn in their walk with God. Individual study is essential; coupled with fellowship times of group study, worship, and discussions of personal insights and observations.

We strive, each Saturday, to foster an open and welcoming atmosphere where Spirit led confirmation, clarification, questions, and correction can be made in the fellowship of other students of God’s Word.

One Nation Under God (www.onug.us) is working to unify the body of Christ in the worship of God the Father, in the way Jesus showed us to - in Spirit and in Truth! We strive to promote rediscovery of American History, and renew in current generations the Vision and the Covenant of our Founding Fathers.
