BIBLE STUDY: The LORD’s Passover (Part 1) Why Do Christians Still Keep It Today?

(Observed this year at Sundown, on Sunday, April 09, 2017 – wherever you live on God’s Green Earth)!!!

Was the Biblical Holy Day of Passover only an ancient Jewish rite, or did Jesus Christ command His disciples to keep it in remembrance of Him, until His second coming?

There are certainly many different answers floating around the world today in response to these questions! What does the Bible say? Did Jesus really weigh in on the matter in scripture, and did He give us instructions on how we should observe an annual memorial of His death and/or resurrection?

Bible Study Instructions: One Nation Under God Ministries (www.onug.us) publishes and distributes weekly Bible Studies, worldwide – free of charge, to anyone who requests them, in both printed and electronic formats. Our Studies are intended to be a simple and fun way to learn the Scriptures, and are very easy to follow! We adhere to Jesus Christ’s Biblical instructions to teach and feed the flock of God portions of meat in due season, on weekly Sabbaths, and on the seven annual Holy Days throughout each calendar year (Luke 12:42 / Isaiah 28:9-10 / Matthew 13:52). Using both the Old and New Testaments, our Bible Studies are designed to present a premise, make a statement, or ask a question – followed by one or more Scriptural references. Just look up and read from your Bible the Scriptures listed. Comments following questions elaborate on the Scriptures you just read. Pray always before beginning any study of God’s Word, asking God to open both your eyes and your mind to His Truth; then Prove everything you read, is in fact the Truth, by comparing it to The Word of God (1 Thessalonians 5:21 / 2 Timothy 3:15-17). Then use the Biblical System of Checks and Balances, and SEE if both Jesus Christ, and the First Century Church of God Apostles – also Did, Said, and Taught these SAME THINGS (Galatians 1:1-12, 5:25 / 1 Peter 2:21, 25 / 1 John 2:3-6)! That’s all there is to it! Our Bible Studies are based on the King James Version, unless otherwise stated. We will be praying for your eyes to “see” (Matthew 13:11-17); and we are always available to answer any of your questions! Be Blessed, in Jesus’ Name! - One Nation Under God Ministries (www.onug.us).

“Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day” – Jesus Christ (John 6:53-54).

It seems pretty clear from these verses that unless we partake of the Body and the Blood of Christ, following Jesus example and clear instructions, we will not have eternal life, and Jesus will not raise us up at the last day (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 / 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 / Revelation 20:1-6 / John 6:39-40). But exactly how and when did Jesus instruct His followers to do this?

Today, many people keep Easter, and still others keep Passover. What’s the difference between the two, and how does one decide which to observe? Is one a holiday for Christians and the other a Holy Day for Jews? www.onug.us

Some tell us that we should ask, “What would Jesus Do? (W.W.J.D.)”, in order to find the answers to questions like these. Then we hear of terms like the Lord’s Supper, Eucharist or Communion; are these different names for the same thing? It can all seem pretty confusing sometimes; with different groups of people all doing different things, in different ways, for different reasons (Matthew 15:7-14 / Mark 7:5-9, 13).

Christian Television: I recently listened as a group of T.V. evangelists told their viewers that God uses the Jews as His time keeping piece. That is why, “they” (meaning the Jews) are instructed to keep Passover; so that the Jews know when God’s sacred calendar begins and also when the Jews’ civil calendar begins. The T.V. evangelist then went on to tell us that the Pope gave us the Gregorian calendar, so that we would know when to more accurately keep Easter! These T.V. preachers then went on to quote various scholars and excerpts from recent books, all to put the modern day Christian at ease – not to worry; the Holy Days and God’s timetable are just for the Jews to keep! Christians basically watch the Jews from a distance, they can pull meaning out of some of what the Jews do, and some of what God tells them in the Bible; but all in all, Christians have their own ways and their own holidays with which to worship Jesus Christ. After all the Jews don’t believe in Christ, do they? …And Jesus is Lord!

Let’s ask ourselves here, is this particular T.V. preaching a valid Biblical teaching? Can one really quote from the Books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy (they didn’t mention the Book of Numbers in the broadcast), and then say that Word of God and His Instructions are meant only for the Jews today (2 Timothy 3:1-17 / Malachi 3:6 / Hebrews 13:8)?

I decided some years ago, instead of asking a speculative “What would Jesus Do” question, that would let me fill in the blanks with my own imagination; I became interested in referencing the historical text, God’s Word - the Bible, to ask instead, “What Did Jesus Do (W.D.J.D.)?” I didn't want to make the Word of God of no effect because I was keeping a vain tradition (Mark 7:13)! I wanted to do everything the EXACT Way Jesus showed His disciples how to do it!!! www.onug.us

“For I have given you an example, that ye should DO as I have Done to you!!!” – Jesus Christ (John 13:15).

“If ye KNOW these Things, Happy are ye if ye DO Them!!!” – Jesus Christ (John 13:17).

Both of these Scriptures, besides having a general application for us to DO everything that Jesus DID; they also have a very specific application for us - to keep the Lord’s Passover EXACTLY as our Lord Jesus Did (John 13:1-20 - W.D.J.D.?)!!!

In fairness, I have to admit to you an overriding prejudice I have on this matter. I believe the Bible is the Holy, Infallible, Inspired Word of God. That it is God breathed, and profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness (I really believe 2 Timothy 3:16-17); and that applying the Holy Scriptures to any question we may have, is able to make us wise unto salvation, through faith, which is in Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 3:15)!!!

It’s O.K. to have been wrong in the past, and to admit to it – if when you see Truth, you change what you were doing! No one is going to hold that against you. I was wrong for the first 25 years of my life in this area! But then God showed me His Truth, and I stopped doing things the way I always had! As I learned new Truth, I did it (John 4:19-26)!!! www.onug.us

The Body and Blood of Christ:

When we give a name to the precious occasion of “actually” partaking of Christ; a review of scripture should be in order. Some basic passages are: Matthew 26:1-2, 17-30; Mark 14:1-2, 12-26; Luke 22:1-2, 7-20; John 13:1-17: and 1 Corinthians 11:1-2, 20-34 / Psalm 105:37-45 / Exodus 15:26 / John 5:1-16.

We can also see in the Old Testament, the proper title for this observance is “The LORD’s (Yahweh’s) Passover (Exodus 12:11 / Leviticus 23:5 / Numbers 28:16) or “the Passover unto the LORD” (Numbers 9:10 / Deuteronomy 16:1 / 2 Kings 23:21 / 2 Chronicles 35:1). Our Messiah, Jesus Christ; the Yahweh of the Old Testament, is the “LORD” spoken of here (1 Corinthians 10:1-4)!

Reviewing these scriptures makes it clear that our Messiah ate the Passover meal (lamb, bitter herbs, and unleavened bread) with His disciples, as prescribed, by Him, in Exodus 12:1-14. Paul told the Corinthians to eat at home before coming together to take the bread and the cup (1 Corinthians 11:20-22, 34). It should be clear to us, that even years after the ascension of our risen Savior; Paul was instructing even pagan converts to Christianity, to keep the night to be much observed, the Passover meal, before they ate of the Body and of the Blood of Christ! Paul was also faithful to teach the Passover observance of bread, wine, and foot washing - exactly as Christ had commanded him to – on the very same night that Jesus was betrayed (the evening – or after sundown – of the 14th of Aviv; not the 15th!!! See 1 Corinthians 11:23)! www.onug.us

After the Passover meal, Jesus Christ took one of the pieces of unleavened bread and attached a special significance to it. It would represent His Body, given for us. Then Jesus took one of the Passover cups filled with wine, and attached special significance to it also. From this point forward, the wine would represent His Blood, shed for the remission of our sins. Then Jesus began to wash His disciples’ feet (John 13:4-5), and commanded them to thereafter wash one another’s feet (John 13:12-17).

Are we still Following Jesus’ Example today?

I never really understood how so many different people could read the same Bible, being led by the same Holy Spirit of God, and then come up with so many different religions and practices - all to worship the same God; that was until I read Matthew 13:10-17 & 2 Timothy 3:7 !!!

“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:20-21).

“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints” (1 Corinthians 14:33).

The Bible tells us plainly that The Spirit of God reveals and clarifies these things to people who are obedient to Him (1 Timothy 2:4 / Psalm 111:10). These people did NOT make educated guesses about the Messiah, prophecy, or scripture. What they predicted and preached about was not a matter of them arriving at some interpretation of events they saw in their own day!!!

We also have the example of Jesus Christ, Himself, specifically instructing His followers to partake of the Body, and The Blood of Christ; and to Wash one another’s feet, as an annual memorial (1 Corinthians 11:25-26 / Luke 22:19 / John 13:1-17) to show the death of our Lord - until He Comes Again and re-establishes the Kingdom of God on this earth, and partakes of the Passover again, with us (Matthew 26:26-29)!!! www.onug.us

The MOST important thing Christ did for us was to die on the cross to take away our sins! The only way JESUS told us to HONOR HIM and REMEMBER HIM, as our Savior; was to celebrate the 14th day of the first month of God’s year, at sundown, by keeping the Passover (Leviticus 23:1-14); and JESUS instructed us to keep this annual memorial of His death, by part-taking in His Body and His Blood, and by the Washing of each other’s feet – once a year – on this same night!!! www.onug.us

Satan hates what God ordains; and so he has turned an annual memorial and occurrence of Holy Worship of a Holy God, into an every Sunday, or whenever you want to, event for MOST “Christians” on planet earth today (Revelation 12:9)!!! Ask yourself, “What is wrong with doing ONLY what Jesus said, and only when He said to do it?” Your correct answer should be, “Absolutely Nothing” (Deuteronomy 12:32)!!! W.D.J.D.?

What we have just read, were Christ’s very own instructions to us! And that is precisely why Satan has had his hands in most “churches”, to change and manipulate the original practices of the Apostles and the First Century Church of God (Luke 6:46 / Malachi 1:6 / Matthew 7:21 / James 1:16-25)!!!

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood (ONCE A YEAR ONLY ON PASSOVER), ye have NO life in you!!!” (John 6:53).

Satan DOES NOT want you to enter into LIFE! Satan hates YOU and Satan hates Passover (the ONLY WAY CHRIST’S BLOOD CAN BE APPLIED TO US SCRIPTURALLY)!!! John 10:10 is either accomplished, OR NOT, by whether or not you and I Keep and Observed the 14th of Aviv Passover of Jesus Christ, every year, in His Church!!! www.onug.us

The Bible also has a very stern warning to those who take the Body and Blood of Christ in an inappropriate manner (without examining themselves, being hungry, drunk, or outside of the annual Holy Day memorial Christ established); and says that many members of the Body of Christ are weak, sickly, and even die because this sin (1 Corinthians 11:23-34)!!!

“Whom shall He teach knowledge? and whom shall He make to understand doctrine? Them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.

For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little” (Isaiah 28:9-10)!!!

Jesus showed us that we must keep His Annual Passover, on the date He chooses! It is a meal first, a night to be much observed (Exodus 12:40-51); then it is a Holy Convocation of His Church to partake of His Body, His Blood, and for us to Wash His Disciples’ feet! Jesus said if we don’t do this (any of part it, or do it exactly when and as He said), WE HAVE NO LIFE IN US (John 6:53-54)!!! www.onug.us

So, the next time someone says to you, “that’s just your interpretation of scripture”; instead of just quoting 2 Peter 1:20 to them, invite them to investigate which interpretation (understanding, or reading) of the Bible is the right one! Ask them What Did Jesus Do (W.D.J.D.)? What did the originals Apostles do? What did their disciples do after them? Walking in Jesus’ Footsteps, foot print for foot print, is NEVER WRONG – and it is THE ONLY WAY for REAL CHRISTIANS to walk, if they truly want to be Servants of Christ (Galatians 1:6-12)!!!

“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the Word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11)!!!

Do other scriptures, support or contradict “your” concept? Is the Holy Spirit giving you understanding of these scriptures? And finally… when you read your Bible, ask what Jesus Christ said on the matter (John 17:17-19, 8:32, 15:3 / Psalm 19:7-11, 119:9-16, 45, 89, 104, 160, 162-165, 169, 172 / John 12:49-50)!!!

“Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve Him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.

And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:14-15) www.onug.us

What kind of God do you worship?

A God who changes Sabbath to Sunday, corrects His "mistakes" of bad laws and makes new laws to replace them? Or is your God one that progressively reveals Himself to mankind through meaningful object lessons, through physical ordinances intended to convey spiritual lessons that will become more and more significant as time goes on?

No, Jesus Christ did not destroy the Passover Law, He fulfilled it (Matthew 5:17-20 / Psalm 119:172 / Matthew 3:15, 17)!!! Christ IS our Passover (John 1:29 / 1 Corinthians 5:7-8)!!!

Jesus is the object and purpose of the Lord's Passover meal. The new symbols point specifically to Him. He is the lamb slain from the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8). The True Passover Sacrifice was planned before the creation of man (1 Peter 1:17-25)!!! That is why it is absurd to say that the Christian ordinance is something new! Christians today, who keep the Passover, are following the example of Jesus Christ, in the Old Testament, and more importantly, Jesus Christ’s example to His disciples in the New Testament!!! Christ, as our Passover sacrifice, is the spiritual reality of the physical type, a clearer picture of God's unchanging purpose!!!

Was Passover really observed by the New Testament Church?

Far from having no further meaning to Christians, the Passover Holy Day was kept by the early New Testament church (Acts 12:4). It is correctly translated "Passover," not "Easter" (Easter being the name of a pagan god, “Ostera” or “Eostre” which was the Anglo-Saxons’ goddess of Spring / in Babylonia she was called “Ishtar”, and identified with the Planet Venus. God had some pretty strong Words about using a pagan god's name like "Ishtar" or "Easter" in our worship of Him [see Exodus 23:13 & Deuteronomy 12:3)!!! Did YOU know that God took away the Kingdom of Israel from King Solomon, after warning him TWICE, NOT to continue keeping two pagan holidays, that would become modern Christianity’s Christmas and Easter (1 Kings 11:1-11)!!! www.onug.us

The Apostle Paul used the Passover as an object lesson to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 5:7) in order to teach them how to follow Christ and purge sin from their lives.

But one of the most convincing proofs that the Holy Days are to be kept today; is that they were kept by the early New Testament Church!!! Notice the statement of Polycrates of Asia Minor in the late Second Century A.D., who gave this defense of the Truth against Victor, Bishop of Rome, who was excommunicating true believers who continued to keep the Passover:

"As for us, then, we scrupulously observe the exact day, neither adding nor taking away. For in Asia great luminaries have gone to their rest, who shall rise again in the day of the coming of the Lord . . . . I speak of Philip, one of the twelve apostles . . . John, moreover who reclined on the Lord's bosom . . . then there was Polycarp. . . . these all kept the PASSOVER on the fourteenth day of the month, in accordance with the gospel, without ever deviating from it, but keeping to the rule of faith," (from Ante-Nicene Fathers, volume VIII, pages 773-774).

”Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21)

How scrupulously do we observe the right day? Do we even know which day that is? Did it ever change? Are we still teaching the Faith once delivered (Matthew 13:52 / Malachi 3:6 / Hebrews 13:8)? Join us next week as we answer these questions and more from the pages of your very own Bible. We will show you that Adam and Eve, and their children kept Passover – it was the FIRST Holy Day other than the weekly Sabbath, that humanity ever observed! Next week, we will see Noah kept Passover before and after the Great Flood; Abraham always kept Passover, and he left Haran on the exact same night, exactly 430 years before Moses left Egypt with the Hebrews – after also keeping Passover! Jesus Christ always kept Passover, and as we shall see in detail next week, commanded His Church not only to keep on keeping Passover; but gave them very detailed instructions on how to Observe this very important ceremony before God (1 Corinthians 10:1-4)!!! Jesus Christ even tells us He will personally keep Passover again, with all of humanity – for 1,100 years upon this very earth, AFTER He Comes Again in Power and in Glory!!!

Until then, plan now to start keeping God’s Holy Days in obedience to Him! Keep The Passover with us this year!

If you are a baptized disciple of Jesus Christ, we invite you to keep the Passover Holy Day with us this year, as Jesus Christ himself instructed us to.

The sad state of affairs today is that the vast majority of Americans are Bible illiterates (Hosea 4:6). They simply have never read the book which they profess to regard as the “Word of God”. If we are to change this, we must begin using the Bible as our primary source of education, to learn about God and His teachings (Matthew 6:33).

If you have never faithfully kept God’s seventh day Sabbath holy or God’s Holy Days, the way Jesus Christ did – in the flesh, and in the fellowship of other followers of the Son of Man (Hebrews 10:25); we invite you to obediently enter into God’s rest today, and to keep the Feasts of the LORD (Hebrews 4:1-11 / Leviticus 23:1-44)! Contact us to find out where we fellowship and worship God, in your area, on His Sabbath Days (Exodus 31:12-18). We would love to hear from you and help get you started!

”But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one” (John 10:26-30).

Christians must learn to read the Bible, interpret the scriptures according to Biblical principles (Isaiah 28:9-10, 13), and begin to apply the precepts they learn in their walk with God. Individual study is essential; coupled with fellowship times of group study, worship, and discussions of personal insights and observations.

We strive, each Saturday, to foster an open and welcoming atmosphere where Spirit led confirmation, clarification, questions, and correction can be made in the fellowship of other students of God’s Word.

One Nation Under God Ministries (www.onug.us) is working to unify the body of Christ in the worship of God the Father, in the way Jesus showed us to - in Spirit and in Truth! We strive to promote rediscovery of American History, and renew in current generations the Vision and the Covenant of our Founding Fathers.

The Days of Unleavened Bread: which begin immediately after the Passover, on the 15th day of Aviv; represent the second phase of God’s Salvation Plan. After we are “Justified” by the Blood of Christ at Passover; God then “Sanctifies” us, or sets us apart and considers us Holy to Him! Although God has now set us apart for Holy use; our sinful human nature is still very much present inside us, and it resists and slows down the process of our conversion to holiness. God uses analogies: like leaving Egypt, and also sin as “leaven” (which puffs up), and His Command for us to only eat unleavened breads with our meals, for seven days; so we have a whole week every year to focus and remind us that it will take TIME and EFFORT on our part, to become what God intends for us to be!!!  But, Praise God, Our Father is a “Hands On” God; and HE has assigned Christ to the job of finishing and perfecting our Salvation (Hebrews 2:6-18, 5:7-10, 12:1-3). Keeping God’s Holy Feast Days and Sabbaths each year, helps us grow with Christ’s guidance; into mature sons of The Living God (Hebrews 5:11-14), soon to be born again!

(Passover is observed this year at Sundown, Sunday, April 09, 2017. The Days of Unleavened Bread begin at sundown, Monday, April 10, this year, and end at sundown on Monday, April 17, 2017. The first and the last days of this Feast are Holy Days to God and MUST BE TO US ALSO – LUKE 6:46)!!! www.onug.us

The above chart shows the phases in a Biblical 30 day month. The last day of the month is not shown, as it is simply an old moon and we cannot see any light reflecting from it! Satan continues to do the opposite of what God’s Word says; and so today we call the opposite of a full moon (a completely dark moon), a “new moon” – but according to the Bible it is not! God’s years begin in Spring - not Winter; and God’s “New Moon” (and months) begin when the first visible sliver is observed by the human eye (Genesis 1:14-19).
