BIBLE STUDY: The Name Of God

What Name Does God Use For Himself? And In Which Human Language Does God Confine Himself To? What Did Jesus Christ TEACH Us About This Matter? Are YOU Sure?

"He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him!!!" (Proverbs 18:13).

I know many in God's church in Arab countries that use the Name Allah to correctly worship God (John 4:22-26). Just as in America people say they worship God or Follow Jesus; yet they do things, say things, and teach things in God's Name, which are prohibited by Scripture and by Christ Himself (Deuteronomy 12:1-4, 28-32 / Galatians 1:8-9)!!! www.onug.us

Did You Know?...

People can use a correct Name for God, yet still NOT OBEY and FOLLOW Jesus Christ in their worship practices!!!

"Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near Me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour Me, but have removed their heart far from Me, and their fear toward Me is taught by the precept of men!!!" (Isaiah 29:13).

"This people draweth nigh unto Me with their mouth, and honoureth Me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me!!!" (Matthew 15:8).

Christ is all about teaching us to Walk His Walk, NOT having us try to make some kind of Holy Sound with our mouths!

Pops, Dad, Daddy, Old Man, Mr. Brown, and Bob were all different names people and my family used to refer to my biological father. All were appropriate and endorsed by him.

This Bible Study will show you what God really says about His Many Names, Written in Scripture (Isaiah 28:9-10 / 1 Thessalonians 5:21)!!! It will also show YOU how to Worship God Correctly, The Way He, A Holy God, Demands of us (Luke 6:46 / Galatians 1:1-12 / 1 John 2:3-6 / John 13:12-17 / Revelation 22:14)!!! www.onug.us

The Name of God: Do you know what it is? Has it ever changed? How am I supposed to pronounce it in my native tongue, or do I need to say it in Modern Hebrew? Am I allowed to actually write God’s Name on paper or do I need to abbreviate it out of respect? Does God care what we call Him? Let’s see what the Bible has to say on the matter (Matthew 6:9 / Luke 11:2 /2 Samuel 7:26 / Matthew 23:9 / 1 Peter 1:17-25 / Genesis 11:1-9)!

Bible Study Instructions: One Nation Under God Ministries (www.onug.us) publishes and distributes weekly Bible Studies, worldwide – free of charge, to anyone who requests them, in both printed and electronic formats. Our Studies are intended to be a simple and fun way to learn the Scriptures, and are very easy to follow! We adhere to Jesus Christ’s Biblical instructions to teach and feed the flock of God portions of meat in due season, on weekly Sabbaths, and on the seven annual Holy Days throughout each calendar year (Luke 12:42 / Isaiah 28:9-10 / Matthew 13:52). Using both the Old and New Testaments, our Bible Studies are designed to present a premise, make a statement, or ask a question – followed by one or more Scriptural references. Just look up and read from your Bible the Scriptures listed. Comments following questions elaborate on the Scriptures you just read. Pray always before beginning any study of God’s Word, asking God to open both your eyes and your mind to His Truth; then Prove everything you read, is in fact the Truth, by comparing it to The Word of God (1 Thessalonians 5:21 / 2 Timothy 3:15-17). Then use the Biblical System of Checks and Balances, and SEE if both Jesus Christ, and the First Century Church of God Apostles – also Did, Said, and Taught these SAME THINGS (Galatians 1:1-12, 5:25 / 1 Peter 2:21, 25 / 1 John 2:3-6)! That’s all there is to it! Our Bible Studies are based on the King James Version, unless otherwise stated. We will be praying for your eyes to “see” (Matthew 13:11-17); and we are always available to answer any of your questions! Be Blessed, in Jesus’ Name! - One Nation Under God Ministries (www.onug.us).

We can begin to see that there are a lot of Names for God in the Bible, and each Name is a kind of description of Who and What God is. When we start to make a list of the descriptive Names God records for us in His Word, we will find the Name count is more than 900 Names! My personal count is currently at 929 Names, and that excludes one additional name that I found that was added by the Catholic Church; but is not found in the original Greek manuscripts, so I do not acknowledge it (because it teaches a false concept of God, and violates Revelation 22:18)!

America’s King (VIDEO):

Very Few People Have Ever Described Jesus Christ Like Pastor S.M. Lockeridge Did, In Just Under 6 Minutes! So let’s take that time this morning to watch this short video clip before we continue on with our Bible Study. Enjoy!

Today, we are going to look at many of the Names God uses to describe Himself to us and to teach us about His Divine Nature; and that includes those Names used by His Son, the Christ; who came to this earth in the flesh, to redeem both it and us, from sin and death, and teach us about Our Heavenly Father (Matthew 11:27 / John 3:35, 7:29, 10:15 / Luke 10:22)! www.onug.us

Remember, too that it was God’s Hand that initially confounded and confused the world’s languages, after the worldwide flood that destroyed the world’s population about 4,400 years ago; save eight people (Noah, his wife, their three sons: Shem, Ham, Japheth; and their three wives. See 1 Peter 3:18-20 / Genesis 6:1-22 / 2 Peter 2:4-5), so using the Expressive Names of God in the different human languages which God Created at Babel, is Scripturally permissible and ordained!

Here are just a few of the descriptive Names of God:

  • The Last (or The Second) Adam: Greek: Eschatos Adam (1 Corinthians 15:20-23, 45 / Romans 5:12-21)
  • Advocate with the Father (1 John 2:1—refers to Jesus Christ who is an advocate for His followers, to the Father)
  • Akal Esh: Hebrew - meaning: “Consuming Fire” (Deuteronomy 4:24)
  • Akrogoniaios Lithos: Greek - meaning “The Chief Cornerstone” (Ephesians 2:20 / 1 Peter 2:6)
  • The Lord (Omnipotent) Almighty (2 Corinthians 6:18 / Revelation 1:8, 19:6)
  • Almighty God (Genesis 17:1 / Ezekiel 10:5 / Revelation 19:15)
  • Alpha and Omega: Greek – meaning “The First and the Last”, “The Beginning and The End” (Revelation 1:8, 11, 17, 22:13)
  • All Sufficient (2 Corinthians 9:8 / Luke 22:35)
  • The Amen (Revelation 3:14) referring to Jesus Christ, who is the Faithful and True Witness! Amen means “so be it!”, and so Christians conclude prayers and hymns with this Declaration of Affirmation. “The Amen” (or Jesus Christ) used the term “verily, verily” 25 times just in the Gospel of John, to show us the Absoluteness of His Declarative “So Be It!” (John 1:51, 3:11, 5:19, 8:58). Another example The AMEN gave us of God’s Power was in the phrase, “it shall come to pass” (used 120 times in the King James Bible; see Isaiah 65:24)!

Note: The New American Standard Bible DOES NOT contain the phrase “it shall come to pass” AT ALL; although Isaiah 7:7 does say: “Thus says the Lord GOD 'It shall not stand or shall not come to pass'”.

If Jesus came to Preach The Gospel of the COMING KINGDOM OF GOD (John 18:36-37 / Mark 1:38-39 / Luke 4:43-44 / Matthew 4:23 / 1 Peter 4:4-11 / Acts 9:1-16 / Ephesians 3:1-21); YOU and I CANNOT Preach that same Gospel of the Coming Kingdom of God, UNLESS we also show the Gentiles and ALL the people, that “It Shall Come To Pass” (or the Kingdom of God is Coming (future tense) to this earth – in the Very Near Future)!!! The Amen, the So Be It, the Bringer of the Future “It Shall Come To Pass!”; The Verily, Verily is MAGNIFIED and GLORIFIED by the 120 Prophetic Expressions of “It Shall Come To Pass” – and He is diminished when “New” versions (or perversions) of God’s Word leave out, or omit these phrases out of ignorance to God Plan, or out of a culpable intent to remove The Way of Salvation from the people (Revelation 22:12-21)!!! www.onug.us

Continuing with a few more of the descriptive Names of God:

  • Christ, the Faithful and True Witness, showed us humans that we could also speak “so be it” into reality, IF we have Faith and follow Jesus Christ’s “it shall come to pass” formula for Success (Mark 11:22-26)! Now you have a better understanding of the POWER that can come from using “Amen” at the end of a prayer, or after making a statement of faith; if we understand Who’s stamp of Authority we are Declaring, in Faith!!!
  • The Ancient of Days: in Hebrew “Attiyq Yowm” / Aramaic “Atik Yomin” / Greek “Palaios Hemeron” / Latin “Antiquus Dierum (Daniel 7:9, 13-14, 22).

These were just 10 of the 929 Names of God in the Bible, in just 5 human languages: English, Hebrew, Latin, Greek, and Aramaic. As you can see, the concepts of Who God is – explained by each Name’s meaning, is clearly understood in any and all of the human languages on this earth (Psalm 47:2, 7)!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------

Another interesting side note:

God destroyed His earth the first time with water; the second time God destroys His earth, and it will be destroyed - because God says it will be, it will be by fire (2 Peter 3:1-9)! Satan has put such anxiety and fear in the hearts of people, that man is capable of destroying the earth… This is a lie! Man cannot destroy the earth, and he never will - despite his nuclear weapons and his reckless ways. People are nothing to God, in our present state of “human” being (Isaiah 40:21-23), yet God still chose to put this world under our control (Genesis 1:28 / Psalm 8:1-9). www.onug.us

Even the full force of Satan’s fury - and some extremely powerful demons (who are destined to be unleashed on this earth during the last three and a half years before the return of Christ), will fail to destroy this earth (Matthew 24:21-22)!!!

An Angelic Prison: Did you know that when the angels rebelled against God in heaven, God locked up some very specific demons – those who were so evil, putting them into the bottomless pit (Tartarus – one of four words translated as “hell” in most Bibles), so that they could not affect mankind until Satan, their king, is allowed to release them during the Great Tribulation? Let’s look at some Scriptures to prove this: 2 Peter 2:4 / Revelation 9:1-12. Did you notice in Revelation 9:1 that Satan is referred to as a star that “falls” from Heaven. Falling is not a good thing in the Bible! Let’s look at what Jesus said about this in Luke 10:18!

Let’s not confuse our angels now. The falling star is Satan in both Revelation 9:1 and Luke 10:18. But when we read Revelation 20:1 we see an angel of God, holy – not a demon, “come down” of his own power, carrying the Authority of God; this angel binds Satan and casts him and ALL the other demons into the bottomless pit (those who were locked up since the angelic rebellion and let out during the Tribulation [Revelation 9:1-12]; as well as those who fell to earth as a result of Satan’s first rebellion, shortly after Creation [Revelation 12:4]. Then for all of eternity, the demons will never be separated again (Demons –separated from God’s Holy Angels after the rebellion into two groups [one group cast to earth, the other reserved in chains or the bottomless pit, until the Great Tribulation]; the demons will first be reunited during the tribulation; then in the bottomless pit for 1,000 years at the Return of Christ; then after they are ALL let out for a little season, they ALL are cast together into the Lake of Fire (by the Saints!!!) for the rest of eternity [Revelation 20:7-10 / Matthew 25:41 / 1 Corinthians 6:1-3]). www.onug.us

For more information about what “Hell” really is (the Bible uses four different words to mean three different places; and only two of which people will ever enter – and both result in the total cessation of life!); check out our Bible Study (at www.onug.us):

Just What The Heck Do You Mean By Hell?

Our Father - The Creator and The Destroyer of Worlds:

God alone is the Creator of worlds – and He alone is the destroyer of worlds (Genesis 1:1, Isaiah 65:17-19, 66:22)! The best Satan can muster up is to attempt to destroy all life on earth; but even he cannot destroy the planet (that is reserved for God alone)… and God will intervene here too to prevent Satan from ever getting his wish (Matthew 24:21-22). www.onug.us

The REAL Gospel is that the Government of God is coming to this earth by the very Hand of Jesus Christ! Jesus is going to redeem ALL the people who have ever lived, throughout history - in the flesh; and offer to ALL an opportunity to dwell as spirit beings in the Kingdom of God – on earth – FOREVER (Matthew 5:5)! Then, God the Father is going to make a new heaven and a new earth, where we dwell with Jesus Christ and God the Father – FOREVER (Revelation 21:1-8)!!! Notice the “Father and Son” relationship which God the Father intends for us (Hebrews 2:9-11 / 1 John 3:1-3)! God is concerned with us overcoming this world, its ways, its influences, its lies… NOT that we called Him a certain Name or pronounced it a certain way (Isaiah 66:16-21)!!!

Do YOU Understand What A Father – Daughter, or what a Father – Son Relationship Really Is? This CONCEPT is much more important to God – that YOU understand it; than how your human mouth and tongue pronunciate His Name!!!

Jesus Christ: Author and Finisher of our Faith (Hebrews 12:2):

God is more concerned with our works and our thoughts… our relationship with Him as FATHER! He has a Plan to fix us in the flesh, then burn up this world so He can usher in what He has always intended for us to enjoy; eternity with Him – in Spirit – upon the earth! Do you really look forward to this… the end of everything you have ever known? We should (2 Peter 3:11-13)!

We should be looking forward to the return of Christ, and eventually a new heaven, a new earth, and a new language - with new names for both Christ and ourselves (Revelation 3:11-13 / Isaiah 62:2 /Ezekiel 48:35 / Revelation 2:17 / Philippians 2:9 / Revelation 19:11-21)! www.onug.us

But for now, let’s get back to the present, and to our past…

-----------------------------------------------------------------

God: The Destroyer of All Flesh and The Destroyer of Worlds (Genesis 6:13)!!!

The Flood That Covered The Earth:

You should know that from Creation to the worldwide Flood of Noah was 1656 years! We can prove this from the Scriptures because we can see that Lamech, or Methuselah's son, has his own son when he is 182 years old (Genesis 5:28). This makes 1056 years since Creation, if we graph it all out on paper - and we have!!! :o) www.onug.us

Lamech's son was Noah (Genesis 5:29). Noah was 500 when he had Shem (Genesis 5:32). This takes us to the year 1556 since Creation.

The Bible is very clear in what year the worldwide Flood happened (Genesis 7:11). Add another 100 years to Noah’s life and our previous date of 1556 years; and we can prove a worldwide Flood happened in the year 1656 from Creation!

The CREATOR GOD: www.onug.us

1) From Creation to the Flood = 1656 years.

2) Abraham is born 292 years after the Flood.

(292 + 1656 = 1948 years since the Creation at Abraham’s birth).

3) Abraham receives God’s Promise and leaves Haram at age 75

(1948 + 75 = 2023 years since Creation, when Abram leaves).

4) Paul (Galatians 3:17) says the Israelites left Egypt 430 years after God gave the promise to Abraham (430 + 2023 = 2453 years from Creation, when the Exodus begins).

5) 1 Kings 6:1 tells us Solomon began to build the LORD’s temple 480 years after the Exodus, in the 4th year of his reign (2453 years + 480 = 2933 years from Creation, when the temple building began).

6) 1 Kings 6:37-38 tells us it took 4 years to finish laying the foundation of the temple, and another 7 years to complete the building, for a total of 11 years (2933 + 11 = 2944 years from the Creation, until Solomon’s temple was finished).

7) Rabbinic sources and archeologists state the first temple stood for 410 years before it was destroyed (2944 + 410 = 3354 years from Creation, when the first temple was destroyed in 586 B.C.). In 2017 A.D., that would have been about 2,603 years ago (2017 + 586 = 2603 years ago from today)!!! www.onug.us

8) Jesus was born in 3 B.C. (The current Gregorian calendar that we use today has a 4 year error. There is no zero year, but we must still factor it in). Still, using the current B.C. or now the “don’t mention Christ” BCE (before the common era) formula, we see Christ was born in the flesh about 3940 years after Creation (Luke 3:23-38); or using the destruction of the first temple as a Biblical guide, Jesus was born 586 years after it was destroyed (3354 + 586 = Jesus was born 3940 years from Creation)! www.onug.us

For inquiring minds: The Second Temple. In 539 B.C. (about 2500 years ago), Cyrus the Great conquers Babylon after death of King Nebuchadnezzar, and establishes the Medo-Persian Empire. Cyrus allows more religious freedom, he releases the Jews from Babylonian captivity (the Jews having lost track of time, they now keep the Passover on the 15th of Aviv instead of the 14th), and they return to Judah. In 536 B.C. work begins to rebuild the temple which was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 B.C. In 516 B.C. the second temple is consecrated for worship, 70 years after it was destroyed. In 333 B.C. Alexander conquers Macedonia, paving the way for the Old Testament to be translated into Greek in 250 B.C. (called the Septuaginta). In 63 B.C. the Romans take over Israel after the death of Alexander. In 3 B.C. Jesus is born in Bethlehem. In 70 A.D. the Romans destroy Jerusalem and the Second Temple to suppress the Jewish uprising, killing about 1.1 million Jews, according to historian Josephus (Matthew 24:1-2. The Romans cut down all the trees and overturned all the buildings, even digging up the foundational stones – looking for buried gold and silver – for a radius of 10 miles in all directions from the Temple Mount. Only the old Roman Fort was spared, which is today the wailing wall “of the old Roman Fort” and upon which is now built the Dome of the Rock). For more information about where the original Temple stood, please see pages 8-13 of our Bible Study:

Learning How To Recognize The King Of The North, The Beast Of Revelation; And The Abomination Of Desolation (Part Three) at www.onug.us

9) If we can prove Biblically that 3940 years from Creation that Christ was born; and we know that was only 2017 - 2021 years ago (3940 + 2017 = 5957); then today, we are only living about 5,957 years after God created Adam – in the beginning!!! (2 Peter 3:3-13 / Exodus 31:15-17 / Revelation 20:4-6). Evolution is a LIE, and a demonic one at that!!!

76 Generations: There are 76 generations from Adam to Jesus listed in Luke 3. We do not know exactly how old each son of God was (within the age of each father listed in Scripture), when they fathered a son. For example, Terah (Abram’s Dad) was 70 when he had Abram (Genesis 11:26). But was that in the first or the twelfth month of his 70th year? You can see that it is possible to have a variation of up to almost 76 years in the 5,955 years since God made Adam, and the 4 year error of the Gregorian calendar is not factored in either! So today we could be somewhere in between the years 5,875 to 5,959 since Creation week started God’s time keeping system (Genesis 1:14-19)!!! When we keep God weekly Sabbath Day, exactly as He Commands us to, we acknowledge God as our Creator – exactly as His Word above shows us He is!!! www.onug.us

Jesus calls us to WATCH (the clock – His clock) and PRAY ALWAYS that we may be accounted worthy to escape the sudden trap that will spring upon this world! He WARNS us not to get tangled up with this world’s way of measuring time (Evolution’s millions and billions of years, the Catholic church’s B.C. or A.D., or the modern day academics’ BCE or CE), which teach us nothing about the Plan of God, or how to gauge time on a Biblical scale (Matthew 24:32-44 / Mark 13:14-37 / Luke 21:34-37)!

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24-25)!!! www.onug.us

Can YOU see the day approaching? Do YOU see God’s Plan of 6 days to work, and one day to rest? Can YOU see his Plan to rescue man from sin and death after 6,000 years of human history, and usher in 1,000 year rest with the worldwide implementation of the Kingdom of God on this very earth?

Just as Jesus in the flesh, would cease from His labor as a carpenter, and rest on the seventh day (Sabbath / Saturday), He gathered or convocated with His followers, and taught them The Father’s Way and The Father’s Word; so shall Christ return at the end of 6,000 years, and fellowship with ALL of Mankind for a thousand years and give us REST!

Jesus has always communicated God’s Truth and Plan to mankind; at first in one language, and now in many languages!

From Creation to the Flood, there was only one world language; a constant that lasted up until about a hundred years after the flood, until the city of Babel was built.

Noah lived to the age of 950; that was 350 years after the great flood (Genesis 9:28-29). After the Flood, “antediluvian” or “pre-diluvian” (before the deluge / Flood) human life-spans gradually diminished to what we see today; being reduced from almost a thousand years long (pre-Flood), to the 120 years God’s Word says is possible for us today (Genesis 6:1-3). But this is not what Satan – the father of lies - and this fallen world tells us today!

I grew up hearing that people can generally realize a 70 year life expectancy. The internet and insurance companies are awash in life expectancy charts and calculators. Notice this one I found on-line: It is titled “Average Life Span Expectancy Chart – How Long Will I Live?” It then states: “Today humans have an average life span of 31.99 years in Swaziland and 82 years in Japan. The oldest confirmed recorded age for any human ever born is 122 years of age, though some people are reported to have lived longer there are no records to confirm these claims.” Obviously, they have not read the Bible!!! www.onug.us

King David knew God intended for man to live for a thousand years. He knew the penalty for sinful living, after the Flood reduced human life spans to 70 or 80 years; but he also knew God’s righteous could live to 120 years old – right now; and that God would restore human life-spans at the Messiah’s return (Psalms 90:1-17 ; 92:12-15)! When Christ returns, He will restore all things to their pre-flood conditions (Acts 1:11, 3:20-22 / Matthew 17:11 / Romans 8:21). That includes a thousand year life span for those flesh and blood humans alive upon the earth during the thousand year reign of Christ (Isaiah 65:20-25)!

Human population levels from the Flood to the time of Abraham:

We know that Noah had three sons, who in turn had at least 16 recorded sons of their own (and probably just as many daughters); that would put each family with about ten children each (5 boys and 5 girls). From the time of the Flood until the birth of the Patriarch Abraham, a total of 292 years are recorded in the Bible (original Hebrew Texts), through eight generations. By the time Abraham journeyed into Canaan (Genesis 12:1-5), about 367 years had passed since the Flood (Abraham left Haran when his father, Terah, was 145 years old. Terah died at age 205, which was 60 years after his son left home and journeyed into the land of Canaan [see Genesis 11:26, 32, 12:4]).

The Bible records that there were well populated cities and nations in the world by that time too, such as Chaldea, Egypt, and Philistia (read Genesis chapters 12 through 25). When Abraham died at age 175, he left eight sons (Genesis 25:1-8), Isaac died at 180 with two sons (Genesis 35:27-29), and Jacob (whom God changed his name to Israel), had 12 sons and lived to be 147 (Genesis 47:27-29); and as we can see, the lifespan of humans was beginning to shorten dramatically after the Flood (Genesis 47:7-9).

It then seems reasonable, that during the 367 year time period from the Flood, to the time “Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and went forth to go into the land of Canaan” (Genesis 12:5); that ten generations had lived. With a family size of 8-10 people, each having an average post-flood life-span of about 200 years, at that point in human history; we can estimate (along with the genealogies of Genesis 11) the world’s population at the time of Abraham, to have been in the neighborhood of 2.8 to 3 million people!!! www.onug.us

This Biblically derived world population estimate, is also supported by secular archaeological studies of world history during this time period.

So now that we have a better estimate of how human populations grow, and we have supported that from Scripture; let us now return to The Tower of Babel – and relate human population growth to our present language development.

The Water-Proof City and Tower of Babel:

The City and Tower of Babel seems to have been built 101 years after the Flood, about the time of the birth of Peleg (whose name means "division”; and was probably was given to him, by his father Eber, in commemoration of that event. See Genesis 10:25). There are 70 nations mentioned in Genesis 10 all starting from the division at Babel. Remember that nations in the Bible, all grow out of families. We can then reasonably assume, that there were 70 families at Babel (the generations of Noah’s grandsons and great-great-grandsons). Using the 5 boys and 5 girls formula we used previously, or each family having an average of 10 children; we can reasonably say there were 70 families at Babel, who had each grown to about 1,000 people by 101 years after the flood, or close to 70,000 people. www.onug.us

“And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech” (Genesis 11:1). The world’s population, a hundred years after the worldwide flood, was about 70,000 people; and they all spoke and wrote the same language! This means they all had the same Name for God and all pronounced it the same way too!

“And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven (what we would call today a skyscraper); and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth” (Genesis 11:4-9). www.onug.us

It was God who confused human languages, and God who, in each and every language, reveals Himself and His Gospel to those He calls (John 6:44, 14:6 / Revelation 5:9, 7:9, 14:6 / John 15:15-16). God is called by many names in the Bible. Learn to follow and obey His Word and His Voice; don't get wrapped up in how you pronounce the Name of Christ. Jesus is who He is, not how His Name "Sounds", in your particular language! Christ will again use a new name upon His return (Revelation 3:12)! We do NOT need to sound out Christ’s Name a certain way, in order to be saved! The same God who confounded the world's languages (Genesis 11:5-9) is the God who exalts Christ in and through every language (Acts 2:4-11). The Holy Spirit can speak through every language in order to move those called by the Father. John 10:16 says there are other folds who can hear Christ's voice in their native tongues. God is much bigger than how some imagine His Name is to be pronounced - the deaf read the Word by signing, the blind by touch, and yet both can still hear His voice and are called by His Name!

God’s Name is both Personal and Attributive to His Divine Qualities! It is Who He is, and What He is! God’s name passes into all common forms of thought! It can be ethical, or cultural, or historical… but it always represents WHO God is; the Name of God represents the very nature of God! www.onug.us

In Judaism, the pronunciation of the Name of God has always been guarded with great care. There is even an ancient Jewish tradition that holds to the concept that the pronunciation of the Name of God could only be communicated to others once every seven years! But is this Biblical? No; It is NOT!!!

The Bible tells us not to take the Name of the LORD thy God in vain (Exodus 20:1-7), but that does not mean we cannot speak it or write it down!!! At the completion of Solomon’s Temple the name of God was made unlawful; its public use was punishable by death by the Jews living at the time. This tradition took God’s command not to step upon or degrade His Name to levels God never intended! In Christianity, God's name may not be used in vain, which is commonly interpreted to mean that it is wrong to curse while making reference to God; or that we should not swear by the Name of God (Matthew 5:33-37). Insurance companies regularly do this by calling terrible destruction “acts of God”, but are they?

Satan knows that God’s Name has Power in every language and spoken version of it! That is why so many use God’s Name swearing, and when committing horrific, or abominable acts (ie: Hollywood movies, Islamic extremist beheadings, and the porn industry to name just a few). www.onug.us

Now let’s look at just a few more of the many names of God!

Old Testament translations and their Hebrew inferred meanings for the Name of God: www.onug.us

God’s Names frequently are based on Who He is. This is how we Worship a Holy Father God, in Spirit and in Truth (John 4:23-24); by knowing who our Heavenly Dad really is!!! That’s why Christ came – to reveal the Father to us (Matthew 11:27 / John 14:9-14)!!! www.onug.us

Pronouncing the Name of God:

Nothing in the Jewish Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament) prohibits a person from pronouncing the Name of God!!! Indeed, it is evident from scripture that God's Name was pronounced routinely (as it is today – in many languages and tongues). Many common Hebrew names contain "Yah" or "Yahu," part of God's four-letter Name. The Name was pronounced as part of daily services in the Temple. www.onug.us

The Mishnah (the written version of Jewish oral tradition) also confirms that there was no prohibition against pronouncing The Name of God in ancient times. In fact, the Mishnah recommends using God's Name as a routine greeting to a fellow Jew (Berakhot 9:5). However, by the time of the Talmud (The Mishnah along with the written opinions of thousands of rabbis on various subjects), it was the custom, BY THEN, to use substitute Names for God.

Some rabbis asserted that a person who pronounces YHVH according to its letters (instead of using a substitute) has no place in the World to Come, and should be put to death. Instead of pronouncing the four-letter Name, they usually substitute the Name "Adonai," or simply say "Ha-Shem". www.onug.us

Although the prohibition on pronunciation applies only to the four-letter Name, Jews customarily do not pronounce any of God's many Names except in prayer or study. The usual practice is to substitute letters or syllables, so that Adonai becomes Adoshem or Ha-Shem; Elohaynu and Elohim become Elokaynu and Elokim; Eil becomes Keil, etc. This practice can still be found within many Messianic Jewish circles to this day; facebook being a great modern example of this! www.onug.us

With the Temple destroyed and the prohibition on pronouncing The Name outside of the Temple, pronunciation of the Name fell into disuse. Scholars passed down knowledge of the correct pronunciation of YHVH for many generations, but eventually the correct pronunciation was lost, and we no longer know it with any certainty! We do not know what vowels were used, or even whether the Vav in the Name was a vowel or a consonant. Review the Hebrew Alphabet for more information about the difficulties in pronouncing Hebrew!!!

Some religious scholars suggest that the Name was pronounced "Yahweh," but others do not find this pronunciation particularly persuasive.

Historian Flavius Josephus, a first century Roman-Jewish scholar - who was born a “Kohein” (supposedly a descendant of Aaron), at a time when the pronunciation of the Name was still known; said that The Name was four vowels (War of the Jews, Book V, Chapter 5), probably referring to the fact that each of the four consonants in the name can serve in Hebrew as a vowel or vowel marker. www.onug.us

Some people render the four-letter Name as "Jehovah," but this pronunciation is particularly unlikely. The word "Jehovah" comes from the fact that ancient Jewish texts used to put the vowels of the Name "Adonai" (the usual substitute for YHVH) under the consonants of YHVH to remind people not to pronounce YHVH as written. A sixteenth century German Christian scribe, while transliterating the Bible into Latin for the Pope, wrote the Name out as it appeared in his texts, with the consonants of YHVH and the vowels of Adonai, and came up with the word JeHoVaH ("J" is pronounced "Y" in German), and the name stuck.

Today we do not know how to say the Name of God the way Adam and Eve spoke it, or the pronunciation Jesus and His disciples used. We worship God today in our own languages, which God originally made at Babel… in Spirit and In Truth! It is still possible to know Christ, and to know the Father, and to follow Jesus’ example – no matter what tongue you speak (John 13:15-17)! Praise God!!! www.onug.us

Jesus told His Followers that He would never leave them or forsake them (Hebrews 13:5 / Deuteronomy 31:6-8 / Matthew 16:13-18 / Mark 16:19-20). That means the Son of God never abandoned His church, or left them to their own devices so that they would have to figure things out for themselves. Jesus personally told us that He is the Sheppard of His church; He says that He personally guides it and that His sheep follow Him, and that they know His voice (John 10:1-5). God does not change, neither does Jesus Christ (Malachi 3:6 / Hebrews 13:8); so we can know absolutely that Christ is still very much in control of EVERYTHING that His church is doing right at this very moment (Matthew 28:18-20)!

An All Powerful Jesus Christ would never allow His Body to decay, die, or even fragment into thousands of different flavors of Christianity over the last two millennia; and if Jesus Christ will not allow something to happen - then it has not happened!!! Christ’s Church then must still be alive, here on this earth! It is out there - ready for us to find, ready for us to join - and we can be confident that Christ’s Church it still doing what Jesus called it to do!!! www.onug.us

God is called by many names in the Bible – so is His Son! Learn to follow and obey His Word and His Voice; don't get wrapped up in how you pronounce the Name of our Father or the Christ.

Jesus is who He is (Exodus 3:14)!!! He is NOT how His Name "Sounds", in your particular language! Remember, Jesus Christ is going to give YOU a new name at His Return (Revelation 2:17)! Jesus will then write upon YOU, the very Name of God The Father, the name of the very city in which YOU will live, and then Jesus Christ will actually write upon YOU, His New Name (Revelation 3:11-13)!!! One day very soon now, we will all SPEAK the Name of God, just as our Father speaks it – if we can hear, follow, and simply obey His Voice!!! Amen!

The First Century Church of God is still alive and well; and we are still about our Father’s Business! We would like to Thank You for joining One Nation Under God Ministries (www.onug.us) today in the Study of God’s Word! The sad state of affairs today is that the vast majority of Americans are Bible illiterates (Hosea 4:6). They simply have never read the book which they profess to regard as the “Word of God”. If we are to change this, we must begin using the Bible as our primary source of education, to learn about God and His teachings (Matthew 6:33).

If you have never faithfully kept God’s seventh day Sabbath holy or God’s Holy Days, the way Jesus Christ did – in the flesh, and in the fellowship of other followers of the Son of Man (Hebrews 10:25); we invite you to obediently enter into God’s rest today, and to keep the Feasts of the LORD (Hebrews 4:1-11 / Leviticus 23:1-44)! Contact us to find out where we fellowship and worship God, in your area, on His Sabbath Days (Exodus 31:12-18). We would love to hear from you and help get you started!

Join us on-line each Sabbath and Holy Day at www.onug.us where you can download our Bible Studies, or join us on facebook to listen in to our live webinar each week.

”But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one” (John 10:26-30).

Christians must learn to read the Bible, interpret the scriptures according to Biblical principles (Isaiah 28:9-10, 13), and begin to apply the precepts they learn in their walk with God. Individual study is essential; coupled with fellowship times of group study, worship, and discussions of personal insights and observations.

We strive, each Saturday, to foster an open and welcoming atmosphere where Spirit led confirmation, clarification, questions, and correction can be made in the fellowship of other students of God’s Word.

One Nation Under God Ministries (www.onug.us) is working to unify the body of Christ in the worship of God the Father, in the way Jesus showed us to - in Spirit and in Truth! We strive to promote rediscovery of American History, and renew in current generations the Vision and the Covenant of our Founding Fathers.
