BIBLE STUDY: What's For Dinner? A Biblical Look At The Foods People Eat!

Do you know the difference between Clean and Unclean Meat’s? Does God approve of hunting and fishing? What kind of foods did Jesus tell His Disciples to eat, and why? Have you ever eaten one of the ancient food recipes recorded in Scripture? Do the old dietary rules still apply to us today? Let’s open up our Bibles and find out!

Bible Study Instructions: One Nation Under God Ministries (www.onug.us) publishes and distributes weekly Bible Studies, worldwide – free of charge, to anyone who requests them, in both printed and electronic formats. Our Studies are intended to be a simple and fun way to learn the Scriptures, and are very easy to follow! We adhere to Jesus Christ’s Biblical instructions to teach and feed the flock of God portions of meat in due season, on weekly Sabbaths, and on the seven annual Holy Days throughout each calendar year (Luke 12:42 / Isaiah 28:9-10 / Matthew 13:52). Using both the Old and New Testaments, our Bible Studies are designed to present a premise, make a statement, or ask a question – followed by one or more Scriptural references. Just look up and read from your Bible the Scriptures listed. Comments following questions elaborate on the Scriptures you just read. Pray always before beginning any study of God’s Word, asking God to open both your eyes and your mind to His Truth; then Prove everything you read, is in fact the Truth, by comparing it to The Word of God (1 Thessalonians 5:21 / 2 Timothy 3:15-17). Then use the Biblical System of Checks and Balances, and SEE if both Jesus Christ, and the First Century Church of God Apostles – also Did, Said, and Taught these SAME THINGS (Galatians 1:1-12, 5:25 / 1 Peter 2:21, 25 / 1 John 2:3-6)! That’s all there is to it! Our Bible Studies are based on the King James Version, unless otherwise stated. We will be praying for your eyes to “see” (Matthew 13:11-17); and we are always available to answer any of your questions! Be Blessed, in Jesus’ Name! - One Nation Under God Ministries (www.onug.us).

The Ancient World versus our Modern World:

How does killing and eating the fatted calf (Luke 15:11-24) compare with organizations like P.E.T.A. (People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals) whose mission statement reads as follows: “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any way”?

Has P.E.T.A. changed the Truth of God into a lie - by worshipping and serving the creature more than the Creator God (Romans 1:25)? In recent years, celebrities such as Christy Turlington, Marcus Schenkenberg, Kim Basinger, designer Todd Oldham, and Pamela Anderson, among others, have proclaimed, “We’d rather go naked than wear fur”! Some have even made headlines, posing and being photographed in “the buff” to make that message heard, and seen! But what does the Bible say on these things (Genesis 3:21)?

Here’s a mild example of what I am talking about. Here Wendy Williams, a popular daytime talk show host, poses for PETA’s ad campaign. “We should all try to be comfortable in our own skin and let animals keep theirs!” Wendy says. Never forget that it was Almighty God who made both man and beast; and it was That Same Creator, who also KILLED animals to cover Adam and Eve with their skins! Christ also Commanded His Disciples to EAT a Passover Lamb with Him on the Night of His Betrayal and death! Make sure you get YOUR ideology and concepts from God and His Word; and NOT from men and this world! www.onug.us

To context reframe our study today, let’s read 2 Peter 3:1-13. Peter stirs up our pure minds by way of remembrance, warning us that those who scoff at The Bible, are “willingly ignorant” of:

1) Creation, 2) The Flood, 3) God’s 7,000 year World Plan, that ALL should come to repentance, 4) Our Calling as Saints to Look for, and Hasten the coming of The LORD’S Day, 5) The Return of Christ will come as a thief in the night, when the world least expects Him, 6) A coming, post millennium, world destruction by Fire, and 7) The Return of The Father to the new earth where only RIGHTEOUNESS will dwell! www.onug.us

Unless YOU understand what Peter was speaking about, and have proven these Biblical events first; everything else will not fit into its proper place, and YOU will lack understanding of God’s Word in every area!!! Because the false theory of evolution has hijacked so much of Science and Sound Education, most people alive today, do not know where they are now, in God’s Time-Line of world events! God created a perfect world; then Satan along with Adam and Eve messed it all up! God has a plan to fix it all, and put everything back on its original track; but first God is going to prepare His Priesthood, and to do that He needs to call some people to understand and follow, His Plan and His Rules for how humans are to live upon the earth! The first thing God did after Adam and Eve’s sin, was to make them some new clothes! God did not make the world’s first fur coats, it was still too warm for that; but He did make for Adam and Eve, the world’s first “skin coats” or buckskins!

You see, the pre-flood world’s weather was tropical, it was PERFECT, from Creation until the flood of Noah; then God tilted the world on its present axis, and broke up the layer of water between us and outer space (Genesis 1:1-8, 7:1-24, 8:1-22, 9:1-17). With our “greenhouse” or canopy dome of ice in the sky, now gone, God set the stage for the harsh winters that we know today, the earth’s poles began to get cold and accumulate ice; but from the Beginning (and up until about 4400 years ago) this was not so! www.onug.us

Evidence of a Worldwide Tropical Paradise:

Coral only grows in water that is 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Centigrade) or warmer; yet we find fossil coral in Canada, Alaska, Newfoundland, Greenland and Spitsbergen, Norway - from the pre-flood age! Admiral Byrd’s expeditions to Antarctica (South Pole) found and photographed a mountain composed totally of coal there; along with palm trees, tropical vegetation, bobcats, and camels under the ice! In the 1970’s and 1980’s, Antarctic expeditions discovered among other things, a crocodile-like jaw bone, sub-tropic animal skeletons, a petrified forest, seed ferns similar to those growing in Florida, freeze dried moss that is indistinguishable from modern species; and on an island off the coast of Siberia, a female woolly mammoth was found preserved in the ice with hair, muscle tissue, and flowing blood!

To date, the bones of eight dinosaur species have also been found in Antarctica. The first, discovered in 1986 was “Antarctopelta”, a medium sized (about 13 feet long) armored -plant eating dinosaur. In 1991, a “Cryolophosaurus”, a large (about 26 feet long) plant eater’s skeleton was found about 7 feet away from a fossilized tree trunk. These creatures required a hefty diet, and a supporting tropical rainforest ecosystem to sustain them! Currently, the U.S. Navy is reported to be uncovering and exploring the ruins of an ancient civilization, two miles under the Antarctic ice! Yes; our pre-flood world was a tropical, and technologically advanced society, where people used animal skins for clothing and accessories – much like we do today; and God’s Biblical definitions of clean and unclean animals was also fully known to man, long before God reminded mankind, through Moses, on Mount Sinai!!!

“Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female!” (God’s Pre-Moses Instructions to Noah BEFORE The Great Flood in Genesis 7:2). www.onug.us

A Return To Paradise When Jesus Returns:

When and Where is Paradise (Luke 23:39-42 / Matthew 6:7-10 / 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 / Daniel 12:2-3 / Zechariah 14:4-5 Revelation 5:10, 20:6, 5 / Ezekiel 37:5-6, 12-14)!!! www.onug.us

God is going to send Jesus Christ back to restore this world to its original tropical environment (no more tilt! Acts 1:10-11, 3:19-25 / Matthew 17:1-3, 5, 9-13); then the whole world will return to an agriculturally based society again (Micah 4:4); and our days of being omnivores (and carnivores) will cease, as we return to being only vegetarians – as humanity was ordained by God to be, long before the Flood. God will then again walk with mankind, in a worldwide garden of Eden; the spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, and of divine knowledge will allow the world to recover the tremendous technological advancements that were lost by the Flood (Isaiah 11:1-9)! www.onug.us

Here is an ancient stone carving showing men in control of very technological machinery – very much like our astronauts use today! The Word of God tells us Jesus Christ will return the world to the technologically advanced achievements of the pre-flood world – but this time as a God Centered World – AFTER Our Savior Returns to Implement The Kingdom of God upon this very earth (Matthew 24:37 / Daniel 12:1-4 / John 15:15-16)!!! Has Knowledge Been Lost?                                    www.onug.us

Ancient Gold Jet Plane – Exact replica models made with wood really do fly!

Bread, Herbs, Seeds, and Vegetables (Psalm 104:14-15 / Genesis 1:29-30 / Ezekiel 4:9):

There are breads on the market today, like Ezekiel 4:9 Bread, that use Recipes in Scripture as their guide! Amazingly, when you stay away from man-made “wonder” breads (it’s a wonder we aren’t dead yet!), which have little to no nutritional value; and instead, follow Biblical instructions in making your bread – you begin to see God’s Hand in your body’s digestion of your food!

Ezekiel 4:9 Breads contain honest nutrition and are delicious!

"Take also unto thee wheat, and barley, and beans, and lentils and millet, and spelt and put them in one vessel…" (Ezekiel 4:9).

God gave us a special, unique combination of 6 grains and legumes that produce benefits beyond what we normally get from our breads, pastas, cereals, and other foods!

  • They are a great source of Complete Protein (Rated 84.3% as efficient as the highest source of protein - comparable to that of milk or eggs)!
  • They contain 18 Amino Acids, including all 9 essential amino acids!
  • They increased Digestibility (Sprouting breaks down starches in grains into simple sugars - so your body can digest them easily)!
  • Increased absorption of Minerals (Sprouting breaks down enzyme inhibitors, so your body can more easily absorb calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and zinc)!
  • Increased Vitamin C (Sprouting actually produces vitamin C)!
  • Increased Vitamin B (Sprouting increases the vitamin B2, B5 & B6)!
  • Great source of Fiber (Combining sprouted grains and legumes gives a good amount of natural fiber in each serving)!

God’s intent for His Creation was for us to eat only healthy foods!

The Blessings of Perpetual Summer:

Weather conditions that are favorable for agriculture are a Blessing from God (1 Kings 4:25 / Zechariah 3:9-10 / Leviticus 26:3-4 / Deuteronomy 28:12). The curse of harsh weather did not come until after the Flood; so Adam and Eve probably looked more like Early American Pioneers in their buckskins (they were naked only until they sinned against God); they looked nothing like the world portrays them today, wearing fig leaves sewed together (Genesis 3:6-7), and nothing like the “cave man” concepts with a bearskin draped across the chest and over one shoulder! Fig leaf aprons were an ill-conceived human decision (one that God immediately corrected with animal skins), and our “modern” concept of bearskin caveman suits, are the fictional product of the anti-God, delusional evolutionists’ propaganda! God is an Awesome God; and so finely and divinely tailored animal skins (or buckskins) were God’s Divine corrective decision for our fore-parents’ sins. Sorry PETA, but God told us, and personally showed us that we can use animals to make our clothing! God’s decision of humans using animal skins for clothing, and other things (belts, sandals, upholstery), will be allowed to continue until Jesus Christ returns!!!

Hunting and Fishing:

Is hunting and fishing “bad” because it hurts the animals?

Obviously, getting struck with a hunter’s spear, an arrow or a bullet, or getting hooked with a fishing lure has to hurt; especially when it leads to the animal’s death. But does that mean that God is against inflicting pain when killing for food, and that Christians shouldn’t practice this?                                      www.onug.us

Students of the Bible should know that the first four of Jesus’ disciples were successful commercial fishermen with boats: Simon Peter, and Andrew (sons of John); James, and John (sons of Zebedee; also known as the sons of thunder. Mark 1:14-20). Peter, James and John were the three closest friends to Jesus; and although they probably did most of their fishing with casting nets (both from the shoreline and in boats), the fish they did catch - died of suffocation (not a pleasant way to die), when they were hauled out of the water (Luke 5:1-11)! Jesus even helped his new disciples catch boatloads of fish – which all died on the boats! We can also see in the Bible that Jesus promoted fish as a healthy lunch meat (Matthew 14:19 / Mark 6:40-42)! God’s Blessings always follow obedience to God’s Word (Mark 8:19). Eating fish is a good thing, or a “good gift”, according to the Word of God (Luke 11:11-13)! But the fish has to die before we eat it!

Hunting, Ranger Smith and Yogi Bear:

We can see that back in the beginning God made man a vegetarian; and all the animals too. Then God gave man dominion over all of his creation, kind of like a game warden today is tasked with environmental conservation and game management (Genesis 1:24-31). But after the flood, that all changed - God allowed us to eat meat in addition to having dominion over all the earth (Genesis 9:1-7).

God then went on to very clearly indicate which kinds of animals were fit for us to eat, and which were not (Leviticus 11:1-47 / Deuteronomy 14:3-21 / Exodus 19:6). Very plainly then - raising, hunting and killing animals for food cannot be wrong (Genesis 27:3,5,30,33, 10:9, 21:20 / Leviticus 17:13 / Jeremiah 16:16 / Proverbs 12:27 / 2 Chronicles 35:1,11,13 / Exodus 12:5-7,14,17,47 / 1 Samuel 28:24). We may kill animals for food, but not for pure sport; as in obtaining just a trophy, discarding the body – or out of a perverse sense of cruelty (Proverbs 12:10 / Genesis 6:5 / Matthew 24:37 / Luke 17:26).     www.onug.us

I recall stories of buffalo hunting from trains in the 1800’s, and remember watching men shoot deer from airplanes when I was a child (they still shoot camels this way in Australia). In the first two cases the hunt was purely for sport and the carcasses were abandoned; in Australia the camels are considered to be a nuisance to farmers, and the dead bodies are left to rot, or for scavengers to eat. Contrast this with some Native American Indian tribes; which are known to thank both the Creator and the spirit of the animals that they kill for food and hides. They know that they are part of God’s Creation, and all living things were made by Him for a purpose (Genesis 1:31).      www.onug.us

God’s Word also shows us that it is not wrong to kill predators (both animal and human). We can see that David in his youth, killed both a lion and a bear to protect his father’s flock of sheep; and later treated the Philistine giant Goliath the same way (1 Samuel 17:34-37)! When Satan rebelled against God, and led mankind in the way of destruction, even the very natures of animals and people were changed (1 Peter 5:8 / Ephesians 6:12). But God promises to restore all things when Christ returns (Roman 8:21-23 / Jeremiah 12:2-4 / Isaiah 11:6-9). The ability to kill any predator in self-defense, is a necessary skill set the prudent will want to possess and hone in this fallen world!

When killing animals, we should always first carefully discern the purpose (food, clothing, culling a heard, protection or defense, or ending an injured animal’s suffering) and our own attitude (obedience to God’s Word). Is it truly for food, or is it more for the sport or trophy? Remember, animals are part of God’s creation, and should be treated with dignity and respect. The American Indians still retain this knowledge today (remember, the life or blood of any creature belongs to God, and must be returned to the earth upon its death), and we should too!

Does God maintain that Clean and Unclean Meats are still binding on the New Testament Church today?

God showed Peter that He is calling all men (not just the Nation of Israel) to repent and be baptized in the Name of Jesus, and to receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:1-48).               www.onug.us

As far as most modern religions in America are concerned, God's laws have been done away - with nailed to the cross. Indeed, most who call themselves “Christians” today, seem to realize that sinning (according to their definition of sin) is wrong; or they believe that Jesus kept God’s Law for us, so we don’t have to. They don’t believe they need to put any mental energy into obeying something that no longer matters – like clean and unclean meats. But does the Bible say this (Hebrews 8:13)? Is God’s Laws about food (NOT the Pharisee’s traditions and man-made ordinances) old, decayed, and ready to vanish away?

Tell most Christians that you no longer eat pork, shellfish, or any of the other foods listed as unclean (Leviticus 11:1-23 / Deuteronomy 14:3-21), and you will probably be labeled as “Jewish”. God's Laws are applicable to all of mankind, throughout time (Psalm 94:12 / Ezekiel 18:5-9 / Mark 2:27 / Romans 2:12-16). This is the Biblical principal of Universal Applicability (Deuteronomy 6:25 / Psalm 119:172). Remember who the God of the Old Testament is, the God who commanded the Laws, not just for Judah, not just for all Israel - for the benefit of all mankind (1 Corinthians 10:1-4 / Malachi 3:6 / Hebrews 13:8 / Matthew 5:17-18 / James 1:17-18, 22-25 / Romans 7:7-13). God gives us His Laws for our benefit, so that we may have an abundant, healthy, and fulfilling life (John 10:10)!!!

Before God Gave Us The Law On Pentecost:   www.onug.us

An Unchanging God always builds a foundation for His People to intelligently stand on when discussing any topic (Isaiah 28:9-10). The clean and unclean laws are specifically mentioned early in God's Word, when Noah was commanded to take "seven each of every clean animal" upon the ark (Genesis 7:2). When Noah and his family (our family – we are all his descendants!) made it back on dry land again, he "took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar" (Genesis 8:20). This shows the student of God’s Word (1 Thessalonians 5:21) that these laws were known and practiced before the Flood; even from the earliest days of Adam and Eve (Abel’s acceptable offering - Genesis 4:1-11).  There were no Jews, Israelites, or Hebrews, back then; so an unchangeable God’s Laws are for all mankind!

What about Genesis 9:3? Does it negate Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14?

Does this say God allows us eat "Every moving thing that lives…, even as the green herbs"? God gives mankind the authority to eat flesh within the same parameters as He allows us to eat vegetation. Does God allow us to eat poisonous plants like poison ivy, hemlock, or deadly nightshade? Of course not! Just as certain plants are harmful to us, so are certain meats. God gave us healthy herbs which we can determine by ourselves which are healthful, and which are not (think mushrooms: you die when you eat the wrong kind!). But man cannot (by himself - without God’s guidance) determine which meats are harmful (just look at all the people sucking down fast food burger meats – and the awesome physiques they create!).  Some meats are unhealthy, but the time they take to kill you is not immediately apparent as is eating a poisonous mushroom! Some foods once ingested are ticking time bombs (Genesis 2:17)!!! We need to respect God’s WISDOM!

God has already determined for us, in His Word, which meats are clean – so we could know and tell the difference!  You just have to trust that God knows what He is doing, and not many people will (Matthew 7:13-14). Since the Flood, every moving clean, healthful, nonpoisonous type of animal life is good for food; just as God gave us the healthful, nonpoisonous herbs to eat!!! But we do not have permission to do as we please!     www.onug.us

Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14 contain God's commandment to Israel concerning clean and unclean meats. In these passages, either He lists specific animals that are clean or unclean or He provides us with instructions about how to determine if an animal is clean or unclean. For instance, He tells us specifically that the camel, the hyrax (rock badger), the hare, and the swine are unclean (Leviticus 11:4-8); and regarding fish, God tells us to determine if they possesses both fins and scales (Leviticus 11:9).

Unclean animals are harmful to the body (simply because God says so)! Many have seen or heard of people poisoned by trichinosis (a disease caused by a parasitic worm larvae) in pork; or becoming deadly sick from eating shellfish. Sometimes, God makes people like my Dad, who have amazingly strong constitutions; they can eat unclean and unhealthy food for many years before they take a toll on their body. But take a toll they will… God is not mocked (Galatians 6:7-9 / Deuteronomy 30:19-20)!

God designed many of the unclean animals for the specific purpose of disposing of the earth's garbage. For instance, without feeling any ill effect, vultures can consume 59 times the amount of botulin (the neurotoxin that causes botulism) that it would take to kill a man. Pigs are scavengers that will eat anything, and if pork is not fully cooked to kill the bacteria in it, it can destroy a person's health or even kill him! Think about that the next time you see a choice between Beef and Pork on the menu!

People around the world eat unclean food and still live long lives, as many of us once did; but for Christians, walking in the footsteps of Jesus the Christ, it is more than a choice of healthy eating. God never directly connects keeping the laws of Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14 with health. It is a test commandment to see if we will obey the voice of God (John 10:26-28)!!!

What About Peter's Vision (Acts 10:9-16)?           www.onug.us

Can we now eat unclean meats? Does a huge sheet full of unclean animals, lowered from heaven, and a voice saying, "Rise, Peter; kill and eat", mean we can eat these animals?

First, what is the subject of Acts 10? It is evident from a thorough reading of the chapter that it is entirely devoted to the conversion of Cornelius, a Roman centurion (verse 1), the first Gentile baptized into God's church. Peter's vision must be understood against this background to be understood correctly.

Second, it is apparent that Peter himself does not at first understand what his vision meant (verse 17); he certainly does not jump to the conclusion that all meats are now clean. While he is pondering it, a delegation from Cornelius arrives and requests that he travel with them to Caesarea to speak to the centurion. God tells the apostle directly to go with the men, "for I have sent them" (verse 20). Obviously, God was orchestrating the whole affair.                                                                 www.onug.us

Third, if unclean meats had been approved, would Peter have not understood this from what he had learned from Jesus? He lived with his Savior for over three years. If anyone knew that the law of clean and unclean meats had been abolished by Christ's sacrificial death, it would have been Peter, but at this point, a decade later, he is operating under no such notion!!!

Fourth, his reply to the Voice, which Peter identifies as the Lord's, is quite confident, even vehement: "Not so, Lord!" This was a command that the apostle knew went against everything he knew about God's law. Even though the Voice repeats the command twice more (verse 16), Peter never changes his mind!

Fifth, within the context, Peter himself reveals what the vision meant. To those assembled in Cornelius' house, he says, "You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean" (verse 28). The vision of unclean animals was merely an illustration God used to help Peter understand that salvation was open to those previously held at arm's length (Acts 11:18). We can see the Holy Spirit is now visibly poured out on these Gentiles (Acts 10:44-47). Neither Peter, nor Luke (the author of Acts), makes any further comments regarding clean or unclean foods, as the vision had served a different and much greater purpose (Acts 11:18)!

Lastly, nowhere in the context is it ever said that God had cleansed unclean meats (this is something that must be assumed by readers who have a predisposition against this statute regulating what we should eat). As Paul says, "The carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the Law of God, nor indeed can be" (Romans 8:7). What God has cleansed, by the Blood of Christ, are the Gentiles, NOT unclean foods!!! www.onug.us

"Every Creature . . . Is Good"

Another passage that seems to state that all flesh can now be eaten is found in 1 Timothy 4:1-5. The flaw with most people's understanding of this verse is that they fail to read what it and the surrounding verses really say! They lift verse 4 out of its context, not bothering to include relevant details from adjacent verses. The chapter begins with a prophetic warning from Paul against false teachers and their teachings "in latter times." Their doctrines would be those of demons, and one of them commands their followers "to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving . . ." (verse 3). Many stop right there, but the rest of the verse is vital to understanding: ". . . by those who believe and know the TRUTH." These pesky details change the tenor of what the apostle is saying!

Notice that the subject is foods or meats in general, not necessarily unclean meats (this must be read into the passage). If we consider only the word "foods," it is just as likely that Paul means that these false teachers would preach against eating beef as against eating pork or shellfish. However, the rest of the verse modifies the term. What "foods" did God create to be received, and eaten, with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth (Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14)?  God has NEVER given mankind any other list of creatures that are divinely certified for us as "food". 1 Timothy 4:4-5 must be taken together, as they are one thought. Paul is telling Timothy not to worry about such prohibitions because God created every creature as "good" (Genesis 1:21, 24-25, 31); and that Christians should accept what they are offered to eat - with thanksgiving!!!

1 Timothy 4:5 adds important, modifying elements to what this means: ". . . for it is sanctified by the word of God and PRAYER”. Sanctify means "to set apart for a specific use or purpose – or as holy when used for humans." The apostle is saying, then, that certain "creatures" are sanctified or set apart as human food by the Word of God in the Bible! God reveals these "sanctified" meats to us in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14!!!

Paul adds prayer to the setting apart of these foods because we have Christ's example of asking God to bless the food before eating (Luke 9:16, 24:30). This further sets apart the food we are about to eat as approved, and BLESSED by God, but in NO way does it make unclean meat clean! Besides, Scripture gives us no authority to make such a request of God!                                                               www.onug.us

In summary, Paul is reiterating that 1) God has set certain foods apart for His people to eat; and 2) we should not be fooled by false teachers who claim either that anything and everything is good to eat, or that certain biblically approved foods should not be eaten!!!         www.onug.us

"Purifying All Foods" (Mark 7:14-23 / Matthew 15:1-20)?

Some believe that nothing entering into a man can defile him, therefore eating whatever one wishes is perfectly all right. These people fail to understand the subject of the chapter, which is Jesus' denunciation of the Pharisees for their rejection of God's Commandments - in favor of their own traditions (Matthew 15:8). Matthew 15:2 introduces the context; the dispute was over ceremonial cleanliness, eating without first washing one's hands, which is not even an Old Testament law - but a "tradition of the elders", which the Pharisees had of themselves proclaimed to be authoritative.

The kind of food the apostles were eating here is "bread," not meat. Jesus' later comments speak generally of "foods" and "whatever enters the mouth," not specifically meat. Mark 7 is not about clean and unclean meats at all! The Greek text has been MODIFIED by the translators. Without it, Mark 7:19 plainly states that the stomach "purifies" any kind of food put in it, not that Jesus had somehow declared all foods to be purified. Also, “purified” is the Greek word katharízoon, which means "to cleanse," "to purify," "to free from filth." In relation to the stomach's or the digestive tract's ability to "purify" food, the sense of katharízoon in this verse is "to purge of waste." This is brought out clearly in the parallel statement in Matthew 15:17; whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated!                                                       www.onug.us

What about Common Meat?

In Romans 14:2-3, Paul admonishes Christians not to pass judgment on others for eating meat or for eating only vegetables. The question that confronted Paul was not that God's people were suggesting that somehow unclean animals had now been made clean, but the belief of some that no meat - even meat that had been created to be eaten with thanksgiving - should be eaten at all! The apostle points out that it would be wrong for the vegetarians to eat meat if they had doubts about it, as it would defile their consciences (verse 23). He concludes, "For whatever is not of faith is sin!"

Romans 14:14 is used by many Christians to conclude that all meat is now fine to eat: "I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean." This is another verse that has been poorly translated to conform to preconceived notions. The problem is with the word "unclean," which does not appear in the Greek text. To mean "unclean," Paul would have used akarthatos, but instead, the text reads koinos, which means "common," "ordinary," "defiled," or "profane (as opposed to holy or consecrated)." Peter uses both "common" and "unclean" to describe meats in Acts 10:14, so there is obviously a difference between the terms!

We know that the Bible defines "unclean" meat in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14, but when is meat considered "common"? The only circumstance in which clean meats are common or defiled is when a clean animal dies naturally or is torn by beasts (Leviticus 22:8) or when the blood has not been properly drained from the meat (Leviticus 17:13-14, 3:17). Animal flesh was called common because it could be given to strangers or aliens in Old Testament times if they wished to eat it (Deuteronomy 14:21). Also in Acts 15:20, 29, the apostles forbade the Gentiles to eat the meat of a strangled animal or meat that had not been drained of blood. In Romans 14:14, "defiled" would be the best term, as the meat under discussion was probably that offered to idols then sold in the marketplace for public consumption. To paraphrase, then, the verse should read: ". . . there is nothing defiled of itself; but to him who considers anything to be defiled, to him it is defiled." The meat was not defiled in fact, just in the minds of various church members, whom Paul had earlier called "weak" (verse 2). These "weak in the faith" Christians believed that, because the meat had been offered to a pagan idol, it had become spiritually defiled. Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 8:4-7 that the demon behind the idol is nothing, for "there is no other God but one" (verse 4). Thus, there is no "spiritual" taint to any meat (1 Corinthians 8:7-8)!!! Paul is not in doing away with God's laws concerning clean and unclean meats. The topic does not even come up! He is discussing meat defiled or profaned due to its association with a pagan idol.                       www.onug.us

All of the scriptures we have reviewed today confirm that the LAW concerning clean and unclean meats is still very much in effect today (Malachi 3:6 / Hebrews 13:8)!

God has good reasons for the laws He gives us, and James reminds us of that (James 1:17-18)! Rather than assume that an Old Testament Law is done away with; we should trust that our Maker knows what is good for His future Sons (1 John 3:1-2 / Hebrews 2:9-10), and out of LOVE and OBEDIENCE put them into practice in our lives (Luke 6:46 / Matthew 4:4 / Luke 4:4 / Deuteronomy 8:3)!!!

King David said in Psalm 23:1-6 “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His Name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over!” We ARE Christ’s Sheep! Let Jesus show us what to eat, and what NOT to!!! John 14:30 / 2 Corinthians 4:1-18 / Luke 6:46?                                                         www.onug.us

Now, Let’s EAT Lunch; and give Praise, Honor, and Glory to the God who made some really great tasting and healthy foods!!! :o)

We are honored that you joined us today, in the Study of God’s Word! We hope that you will join us again next week, and that you will continue to share what you have learned here, with others – at home, at work, and in your neighborhood (Matthew 28:18-20 / Mark 16:15-20)! May our Great God, Bless you and keep you, until then – in Jesus’ Name!!!

God is calling YOU to be a follower of Jesus Christ, and the first century church, can you hear His Voice (1 John 2:6 / Matthew 11:29)? The Sabbath and Holy Days show us God’s Plan. When we keep these Holy Days we become the very Voice of God to this fallen world; we are in effect saying, by our actions on each Feast Day, “Come LORD Jesus, Come” (Revelation 22:12, 17, 20-21)!!! We are actually confessing Christ before men (Matthew 10:32-33)!

The faithful and obedient in Christ will always keep God’s True Holy Days and Sabbath; and will reject the pagan lies and substitutions of God’s TRUTH (Revelation 22:11-15)! God’s Holy Days are meant for Christians to ENJOY! They truly are FEAST DAYS, meant to be enjoyed by God’s elect everywhere, throughout time, FOREVER!!!

If you have never faithfully kept God’s seventh day Sabbath holy or God’s Holy Days, the way Jesus Christ did – in the flesh, and in the fellowship of other followers of the Son of Man; we invite you to obediently enter into God’s rest today, and to keep the Feasts of the LORD (Hebrews 4:1-11 / Leviticus 23:1-44)! Contact us to find out where we fellowship and worship God, in your area, on His Sabbath Days (Exodus 31:12-18). We would love to hear from you and help get you started! :o)

”But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one” (John 10:26-30).

Christians must learn to read the Bible, interpret the scriptures according to Biblical principles (Isaiah 28:9-10, / Matthew 13:52), and begin to apply the precepts they learn in their walk with God. Individual study is essential; coupled with fellowship times of group study, worship, and discussions of personal insights and observations.

We strive, each Saturday, to foster an open and welcoming atmosphere where Spirit led confirmation, clarification, questions, and correction can be made in the fellowship of other students of God’s Word.

One Nation Under God (www.onug.us) is working to unify the body of Christ in the worship of God the Father, in the way Jesus showed us to - in Spirit and in Truth! We strive to promote rediscovery of American History, and renew in current generations the Vision and the Covenant of our Founding Fathers.
