Was George Washington a Christian Man?

A simple question about one of the pillars of our great nation. Yet, I am constantly amazed at how many people today, cannot answer this simple question with a historically accurate and correct answer.

 

When President Washington's birthday was still celebrated across this land, school children were taught about this great American, the day before they were given the time off to celebrate this holiday. Paintings, such as the one of General George Washington kneeling in prayer, hung on school walls, where students could see daily how our first President's posture mimicked their own, during morning school prayer.

 

There was a time, not too long ago, when American school text books still taught our youth what President Washington said to the Delaware Indians Chiefs, who had come seeking to educate their children in America schools:

 

"You do well to wish to learn our arts and our ways of life and above all, the religion of Jesus Christ. These will make you a greater and happier people than you are. Congress will do everything they can to assist you in this wise intention."   - President George Washington

 

You can see why pictures and quotes like these had to be removed from schools, why student prayer and the Bible had to be removed from the classroom. Then a generic replacement of "President's Day", could be introduced; indoctrinating American kids in a watered down, secular version of their history. You must not let children know, that Congress once thought it was a wise intention to teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, if you are to ever have them believe the current lie of "separation of church and state" (http://www.onug.us/content/truth-about-separation-church-and-state-0).

 

Recent attempts by President Barack Hussein Obama to deny the fact that America was, and is today, a Christian Nation, have only empowered historical revisionists to renew their accusations that our founding fathers were secular men, and deists. The last thing they want our future generations to realize, is that our founding fathers were a majority of deeply religious, and Christian men (52 of the 56 founding fathers were Protestant Christians, and 29 of them had seminary degrees!).

 

This attempt at rewriting our history is a direct attack on America's awesome religious heritage, and is also an attack on the God of the Bible, who blessed the United States more than any other nation in the history of His earth.

Understandably, this revision is a necessary prelude to pave the way for a "new vision" of a godless, and blissfully secular America; ignorant of her moral and religious past, ignorant of her God-given rights and liberties. It is all one small part, of a multi-phase conditioning process, intended to desensitize our culture to a coming amoral society, in which everything God calls "good", society's enlightened ones call "evil".

 

"Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" (Isaiah 5:20)

 

I have also heard many people claim that George Washington was a "Deist". So, what is a deist, exactly? Was Washington a deist, if he was not a Christian?

 

Deism: is a religious and philosophical belief that a supreme god created the universe, and that this and other religious truths can be determined using reason and observation of the natural world alone, without the need for faith. Deists generally reject the notion of divine intervention in human affairs, such as miracles and revelations. These views contrast with a dependence on revelations, miracles, and faith found in many Judeo Christian and Islamic theistic teachings.

 

Deists typically reject most supernatural events, such as prophecy and miracles, and tend to assert that God's plan for the universe does not include God intervening in the affairs of men, or suspending the natural laws. Most deists see, what other religions consider as holy books and divine revelations, to be mere interpretations of men and not an authoritative source.

 

The first President of the United States of America, had so often witnessed God's mighty power and intervention in his life, that on August 20, 1778, writing in a letter to Thomas Nelson, he said:

 

"The Hand of providence has been so conspicuous in all this, that he must be worse than an infidel that lacks faith, and more than wicked, that has not gratitude enough to acknowledge his obligations." -President George Washington

 

A Christian Man and President:

 

Jared Sparks, a noted writer and historian who wrote the first-ever compilation of The Writings of George Washington (published in the 1830's), after studying eight large boxes of Washington's manuscripts at Mount Vernon in 1827, diplomatic correspondence, public and private archives, questioning survivors of the Revolution, and reading numerous letters written by friends, associates, and family of Washington said:

 

"To say that he (George Washington) was not a

Christian would be to impeach his sincerity and honesty. ...is it likely, is it credible, that in a matter of the highest and most serious importance [his religious faith, that] he should practice through a long series of years a deliberate deception upon his friends and the public? It is neither credible nor possible."

 

Eleanor (Nelly) Parke Custis Lewis, was the step-granddaughter of George Washington, being raised by her grandparents. Throughout her life, she regarded herself as an adopted daughter, a preserver of George Washington's legacy, having spent nearly twenty years in his presence. She regularly shared memories with visitors, corresponded with those seeking information, and verified or debunked stories about George Washington.  Nelly said,

 

"I should have thought it the greatest heresy to doubt his firm belief in Christianity. His life, his writings, prove that he was a Christian. He was not one of those who act or pray, "that they may be seen of men" He communed with his God in secret."

 

William White gave us some additional insight to George Washington's prayer life, in Washington Writings, with the following account:

 

"It seems proper to subjoin to this letter what was told to me by Mr. Robert Lewis, at Fredricksburg, in the year 1827. Being a nephew of Washington, and his private secretary during the first part of his presidency, Mr. Lewis lived with him on terms of intimacy, and had the best opportunity for observing his habits. Mr. Lewis said that he had accidentally witnessed his private devotions in his library both morning and evening; that on those occasions he had seen him in a kneeling posture with a Bible open before him, and that he believed such to have been his daily practice."

 

Was George Washington a Christian Man? Yes, he was! There is overwhelming evidence, and thousands of examples to establish the facts about the "Father of our Nation". It is a tragedy that millions of American children in our public schools will no longer be taught this historical truth.

 

I close with one last piece of evidence. This is an excerpt from my favorite personal prayer of George Washington (from a 24 page authentic handwritten manuscript book, dated April 21-23, 1752), which clearly shows that this founding father was indeed a Christian man.

 

A Portion of George Washington's personal prayers:

 

"O Most Glorious God, in Jesus Christ, my merciful and loving Father; I acknowledge and confess my guilt in the weak and imperfect performance of the duties of this day. I have called on Thee for pardon and forgiveness of my sins, but so coldly and carelessly that my prayers are become my sin, and they stand in need of pardon."
"I have sinned against heaven and before Thee in thought, word, and deed. I have contemned Thy majesty and holy laws. I have likewise sinned by omitting what I ought to have done and committing what I ought not. I have rebelled against the light, despising Thy mercies and judgment, and broken my vows and promise. I have neglected the better things. My iniquities are multiplied and my sins are very great. I confess them,O Lord, with shame and sorrow, detestation and loathing and desire to be vile in my own eyes as I have rendered myself vile in Thine. I humbly beseech Thee to be merciful to me in the free pardon of my sins for the sake of Thy dear Son and only Savior Jesus Christ who came to call not the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Thou gavest Thy Son to die for me." "Make me to know what is acceptable in Thy sight, and therein to delight, open the eyes of my understanding, and help me thoroughly to examine myself concerning my knowledge, faith, and repentance, increase my faith, and direct me to the true object, Jesus Christ the Way, the Truth, and the Life, ..." - George Washington

 

It is time once again in America, to recapture true values, to promote rediscovery of American history, and renew in current generations, the vision and covenant of the founding fathers.

 

America was founded as a Christian nation, and 85% of all adult Americans (those who profess Jesus Christ as their LORD and Savior) still believe it is! Consider that we, in addition, have the second largest Jewish population (5.3 million) in the world, and we are without a doubt, "One Nation Under God", more so than any other!

 

May the God who guided our Founding Fathers hands, continue to bless the United States of America!
